Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay believes new teenage striker, Rhys Healey, has a big future.
The 18-year-old completed his move to the Bluebirds from Welsh Premier side Connah’s Quay yesterday by signing a two-and-a-half-year contract.
The Bluebirds paid an undisclosed fee to the Nomads for Healey who had grabbed 16 goals already for the North Wales club this campaign.
Manchester-born Healey will start training with the Bluebirds development squad and under-18s to start with, but Mackay believes the teenage frontman will make progress towards the Cardiff first team set-up.
“We’ve brought Rhys in after having looked at the division to see what the best young talent is there,” said Mackay.
“We think Rhys is one with huge potential. He’ll be training with our development squad and under-18s to start with.
“We’ll try and bleed him in gently towards the senior set-up and see how he develops, but he’s certainly one with great potential for the future.”
Healey is a product of the Connah’s Quay academy and as part of the deal which brought him to Cardiff youngsters from the Flintshire club will join up with the Bluebirds to aid their development.
Nomad’s manager Mark McGregor and his senior players will also spend a week in preseason at Cardiff’s Vale of Glamorgan training ground and Mackay and his men will also play a friendly at the Deeside Stadium in the summer.
Healey himself said he was delighted with his move and said the transfer was a big opportunity he was determined to seize.
“I’m really happy to make the move to Cardiff City. I’ve always liked the club and I know this is a bit opportunity for me to impress,” Healey told the club’s official website.
“I’m a striker who likes to play through the middle on the heels of the last defender and I love to score goals.
“It’s now up to me to settle in a new environment, get my head down and work hard. Hopefully, as I progress, I’ll be able to show people what I’m about.”
Mackay and his side meanwhile are preparing to get back into Championship action with a trip to Leeds on Saturday.
Come the weekend it will be two weeks without a match for the Bluebirds following their 2-1 win at Blackpool last time out.
It was a victory which sent them 10 points clear at the top of the table with 18 games of the season remaining.
The Bluebirds were back in training today at the Vale after returning on the weekend from a five-day warm weather camp in Dubai.
They were joined out there by new signing Fraizer Campbell who arrived at the club last week after a move from Sunderland.
The 25-year-old marksman is being bedded into the Bluebirds’ squad this week with an eye on him making his debut at Elland Road.
Cardiff maybe in scintillating form right now with just one defeat in their last 13 league games and with Blackpool making it four Championship wins away from home on the bounce, but they will meet a Leeds side enjoying amazing home form.
