Cardiff City boss Mackay reflects on 'quietest ever' transfer deadline day

' Malky Mackay secured his January transfer deals early]

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay reflected on the January transfer deadline day admitting it was the quietest he’d known.

Cardiff City signed strikers Fraizer Campbell (from Sunderland for £600,000) and teenager Rhys Healey (from Connah’s Quay Nomads for £25,000) as well as defender Simon Lappin in January.

The only other business was Nat Jarvis going out on loan to Kidderminster while today’s opponents Leeds were far busier.

Leeds boss Neil Warnock spent Thursday working flat out to sign left-back Stephen Warnock from Aston Villa.

That followed successful bids for Mouhamadou Habibou, signed from Belgian club Zulte Waregem, and Steve Morison from Norwich.

Warnock also just missed out in a bid to snatch Chris Burke, the former Cardiff winger now at Birmingham.

Morison was swapped for Luciano Becchio, the Argentine striker who has scored 14 goals this season.

But Mackay took a relaxed view, saying: “We were able to get our business completed early.

“Sometimes that happens, but it depends on the players you are going for and the situation you are in.

“Ideally you would want everybody in early in January rather than go to the end, but it often doesn’t work like that.

“We did not make any bid or offers for anybody on deadline day and there were no bids for any of our players.

“Personally, I can’t remember a quieter deadline day.

“On the previous couple of deadline days we’ve been trying to get people in.

“The January window is fraught with danger in terms of the people who are moving at the last minute.

“Sometimes there can be knee-jerk reactions but that’s why we brought in our recruitment team.

“We have procedures in place to structure things properly and have a way of working. I am certainly pleased with that department and the way it’s working.”

While the main transfer window is now closed another loan window opens later this week.

“There is plenty of time to put people out on loan if needs be,” added Mackay.

Robert Earnshaw and Stephen McPhail would both benefit from first-team football elsewhere and there were enquiries for both in January.

But nothing was completed in time and they could both go out on short-term deals after next weekend.

Mackay could also move to strengthen his own squad if necessary, saying: “I feel our squad is fully equipped for what’s ahead.

“They are a hungry, talented group of players desperate to get out there for our last 18 matches and do well.”

“In terms of possible loan signings you can never say never. Something could happen and we may have to go bring somebody in and would do that if it was right.

“It’s only really Premier League clubs who can’t do anything now, but Championship and the leagues below have the ability to go into the market to do something if needed.

“But it’s also true we have a really good group here and they are pretty much up to full fitness now apart from Nicky Maynard.”
