Cardiff City at home, midweek April 2002

I remember going to the home Tuesday night match when Chris Hay scored 2 very late goals to come back from 2 0 down (I was in the lower riverside near the away fans which went berserk, sure anyone else in there at the time will recall).

I also remember a very healthy midweek away following from Cardiff of circa 1500 was it? and many of them being `boyos`, not many families in their end!.

The atmosphere was nasty enough inside the ground and I believe this was the day where it all kicked-off outside the Crescent before the match due to the West Yorkshire Police herding them past this pub to the ground. This subsequently led to Cardiff fans suing the West Yorkshire Police for heavy-handed behaviour etc.

I cannot remember any trouble outside the ground or in Town that day (cant remember how I got there and back to be fair). Can anybody else recall this day and any events that unfolded during the day in Town, outside the Crescent etc?. It sounded from the media at the time like there had been boatloads of bother in Town and on the way to and forth the ground etc!.

The first game was postponed, they had about 300 on 5-6 coach loads (of non shirters lets say) in the Cherry Tree from about 6 o'clock, it was a late cancellation for some reason. The coaches were brought up from the ground along the mainstreet the area sealed off and they were bussed out though it was getting on 8.30.

The re-arranged fixture the same 5-6 coaches ( not the supporters club pop n crisp variety) dropped them in Manchester and they trained it in - which could well happen again Saturday?

The Crescent was rammed - both doors blocked off and Cardiff marched past, one of their lot was filming as WYP dished out some heavy handed public service which later cost them dear in court.

Even the town lot were held & escorted to the ground a good 10 mins later.

One lad jumped out of the lower tier after the equaliser and ran along the front of the away end up to the goals and back, he must surely have been carted off for correctional training.

The 3rd worlders, then all wound up, exited & congregated bottom of the slope by the coach park & it was mayhem afterwards, Town fans came a clear 2nd and the police failed miserably to control 200 in the area down to the bridge.

I wasn't there but I remember the game, seeing kenny irons' name come across the vidi printer on soccer special for a late late equaliser. Think he may have scored against us in the home fixture that year aswell. b*stard!

then caught the train into Huddersfield, OB very heavy handed.

Oh yes i remember it well....

Was my first away trip with the rams and what an eye opener it was, only decided to go up the day before seen a advert in the echo i think it was of travel with the rams for 13 quid and 10 to get in pay on the gate thought ill have some of that so booked with gwyn and the rest is history, still go regular with alot of the boys on the bus that day 11 years on , i think it was the last time you could travel without membership and pay on the gate until the past year so 10 years we had to put up with that shit!!

What a mental day, think there was about 3 or 4 buses all going to spend the afternoon drinking in manchester then trainin it over to huddersfield, the atmosphere was electric from us 150-200 lads signing our hearts out every pub we went in and all the way to huddersfield in the station on the train everywhere, no trouble from us we were just a tanked up bunch excited and looking forward to a massive game against our promotion rivals.

However how the atmosphere changed when we come out of the train station, we were met by about 100 old bill full riot gear no numbers dogs horses the lot, i think our welcome might have had something to do with the famous fa cup game against leeds a few months earlier and west yorshires finest bellends were out in force to ruin our day, anyway they herded us up and started to escort us to the stadium, shouting at us to stay on the road and off the pavements and some boys just strayed and had a baton around the head for thier troubles, what was a happy merry atmosphere soon turned to pure evil from us at the way we were being treated, they even took us passed their main lads boozer i think it was the crescent or something and stopped us right outside waiting for a reaction from us so they had more oppertunity to wade into us.

There was coppers on the doors stopping them geting out and there was pint glasses chairs the lot coming at us thru the windows so obviously a few of us reacted and all hell broke loose again with old bill smashing anything in thier sight just what they wanted, there was people injured everywhere with blood gushing from head wounds the lot, after a few minutes they proceded in escorting us to the ground still hitting us for walking on pavements and that 1 of the boys even got nicked for walking in the wrong place, i couldnt believe how pathetic they were being with us but i was hooked after that :D

Eventually we got to the ground minus a good few boys who made the trip to manchester (they had last laugh in the end  ) and the game is a bit of a blur other than i can remember them scoring a injury time equilizer and them having a a mini pitch invation and all hell breaking out in our end again then it kicking off a bit near our coaches at the end which were demanded to come to the stadium and pick us up save us going back on train to manchester, i wonder why :x

So yes i will never forget my 1st away for as long as i live it was a real eye opener, im sure gwyn filmed alot of it on his camcorder would love to see it if he still got the footage.

Those days have long gone now and im sure it will be a nice peacefull trip for us all tomorrow now :D

The first time we were up there, when it got called off, i remember getting up there for 2.00. We stayed in that wetherespoons pub, all day. I remember a few young huddersfield coming to have a look what we got, and i swear their colours drained :D :D . The police were heavy that night too, and i remember some huddersfield fan being carted all the way to manchester with us :D
