Former Cardiff City star Anthony Gerrard opens up on Mackay fall-out
by Gareth RogersFeb 8 2013
Malky Mackay and Anthony Gerrard: Fell out after Wembley heartache.
Gerrard has blamed the Bluebirds boss for stripping him of his confidence and self-belief before releasing him in the summer.
Former Cardiff City hero Anthony Gerrard has fired a shot at Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay on the eve of the Championship leaders’ clash with Huddersfield Town.
The tough-tackling defender, who turned 27 this week, has spoken out about his breakdown with the Cardiff City boss, which forced his move to West Yorkshire this season.
After missing the decisive penalty in the Wembley Carling Cup final against his native Liverpool last season, Gerrard fell out of favour in South Wales.
Now the cousin of Liverpool and England star Steven Gerrard has blamed the Bluebirds boss for stripping him of his confidence and self-belief before releasing him in the summer.
Speaking to our sister website the Huddersfield Examiner, the former Walsall man who will be at the centre of Town's defence on Saturday, said: “I didn’t see it at the time but that manager took everything away from me – my self-confidence and my self-belief."
With his table-topping former team-mates set to pay him a visit at the John Smith Stadium on Saturday, rejuvenated Gerrard candidly explained how he bounced back under the tutelage of former Leeds Untied and Blackpool boss Simon Grayson and new Terriers incumbent Mark Lillis.
He said: “It was when the people close to me, my parents and wife, said I wasn’t myself, either on or off the pitch, that I realised."
After leaving South Wales, Gerrard signed a three-year deal at Huddersfield, where he is rebuilding his career in the Town back four after a tough first few months.
He added: “When it dawned on me what had happened I had to go away and have a little talk to myself and get my head straight.
"It's good to be playing regularly, the first couple of months were hard but now I'm cracking on."
Looking ahead to the big game, Gerrard insists his team-mates will be keen to avenge their 1-0 opening day defeat at the Cardiff City Stadium.
He said: "I only played about five minutes in the first game, so it will be nice to play the full 90 against them and right a few wrongs."

Drove himself there more like. He had a self destruct button that rubbed off on the people around him and Malky prob couldn't be bothered with his bolloxs...
Fri Feb 08, 2013 8:46 pm
Absolute sour grapes, what a tw*t.
Shit attitude, not good enough for Malky's Cardiff, so he can fook off.
Wembley heartache, don't make me laugh!
Fri Feb 08, 2013 8:50 pm
took away his confidence and self belief? Seems gerrard believed he had the divine right to be in the starting eleven
seems the only person on the planet who belived he should have been in the side over turner and hudson was surprise surprise Anthony Gerrard
I still find it hard to belive that he celebrated with the scousers after the final though
Fri Feb 08, 2013 8:51 pm
Gerrard is a cheat and a clown good riddance to the man we have better players now and without his stupidity
Fri Feb 08, 2013 8:51 pm
Kept out of the side by 2 better centre halfs.
His ego couldn't handle it.
Good luck to him, but he would do himself a few favours by keeping his gob shut.
Fri Feb 08, 2013 9:04 pm
he sounds bitter and twisted to me
Fri Feb 08, 2013 9:41 pm
He had no right to have any self confidence in the first place, he's fecking shite!
Fri Feb 08, 2013 9:49 pm
how do u know for definite that he celebrated with Liverpool
Fri Feb 08, 2013 9:51 pm
Never really liked the guy, had a bit too much to say, without having the quality to back it up. I hate to sterio-type people, but Scouser footballers tend to have a lot to say, which aint a problem when they have the talent to back it up, unfortunately anthonys little cousin aint got the talent.

it seems highly unlikely doesnt it
Maybe he went to their dressing room, which is still highly unprofessional. For what its worth I thought gerrard always gave his best for the shirt but ultimately he wasnt goood enough.Shame the lad cant accept this, keep his mouth shut and move on with his career
Fri Feb 08, 2013 10:02 pm
Why mention it now for the fact we are playing them now?
He needs to realise that he weren't good enough to be a chasing promotion team.
He couldn't even put the work on the training ground to push Turner either.

Nothing in the article to explain a fall out, not bothered either way and this about sums Gerrard up!
Choking on his words this time tomorrow hopefully

To much to say for an average championship/league 1 defender.

I got crucified for suggesting he missed that pen on purpose but now it seems people want to believe that suggestion.

I don't believe for one second he missed on purpose.
But the light that sport is being shown in at present regarding cheating and fixing nothing would shock me.

I have always thought it was dodgy

Well thankfully that's the type of attitude that should see him red carded or lose his head and get destroyed tomorrow
Sat Feb 09, 2013 1:17 am
Sounds about right for Gerrard, always someone else's fault.
That was always his attitude, firstly with Jones and then MM.
As Milly said above a very very average player.

so you think he threw the game then alledgedly

At least hit the f*cking target.
Liverpool's Cardiff fan didn't take a kick so why did Cardiff's Liverpool fan? And even then at least just hit the target. He took away what could have been a career defining medal from a number of incredible performers that day (Heaton, Hudson, Turner etc.)
Aside from all that he seemed like a bellend anyway, and if you're not good enough for Malky you just ain't good enough. Look at Earnie, City legend: ain't good enough. Etien, £2m striker, UCL experience, ain't good enough. Couple that with Gerrard's shitty attitude and its no wonder Malky got rid. Good riddance.

If its true about him going out with the scousers after the game, fook him. That missed pen broke our hearts. Its just sour grapes, if all this, what he said has happenend, why didnt he mention it, as swn as he got sold. I liked gerrard, i thought he had the tenacity in defence what we were missing a few years back. But tbh he was never stand out. GOOD RIDDANCE

Some wanted him in the team at the expense of Hudson
