The Vetch Field Origin

Sat Feb 09, 2013 1:21 pm

I like football trivia and was interested to learn the origin of the name for Swansea Town FC's original Vetch Field and apparently (and I quote the presenter) a 'Vetch' is a "small cabbage-like vegetable that grows on rough ground"

So, it effectively means that Swansea Town played amongst the cabbages...

Must have had an effect, as Huw Jenkins is looking to expand their new stadium to accommodate another 9,000 of those said cabbages!!

Also noted the sign at the back of the stand saying: "Swansea - Wales' Waterfront Town"

Doesn't give too much away but I hear they have considered changing their name to Swampsea ;)  :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Actually, it sums up YOUR club and its 'heritage' ;)

I'm sure you (and Waddle) will respond but it can't possibly be with anything constructive or intellectual, so we'll leave it at that, eh?

The 'discovery' amused me TBF and I'm surprised you both 'bit' as I thought you'd be concentrating on your team's excellent win against Stan's QPR ;)

But, alas, it's just MORE evidence of YOUR infatuation with ALL THINGS Cardiff City and I (genuinely) find that quite sad    :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

vetch, also called tare, Vicia cracca [Credit: Walter Dawn]any herbaceous plant of the genus Vicia, within the pea family (Fabaceae). About 150 species are known. The plants are 30–120 cm (1–4 feet) tall, with trailing or climbing stems and compound leaves with several pairs of leaflets. The magenta, bluish white, white, or yellow flowers are borne singly or in clusters. Two to ten seeds are borne in a pod.

i think you need to go back and research again and apart from the fact we haven't played there for years who gives a shit ,
at least it's a change from attendances , have you seen the prem table up to 7th fellas so the origin of our old grounds name is really of no importance keep trying though you may have something one day to wind us up about

hi Waddle - do you think we'll finally get up this year, and if we do, will all your fans be looking forward to renewing the South Wales derby? - the first time it will have ever happened in the first tier, if it happened!

I'm not counting any chickens yet, but we are obviously in a good position, and just wondering about your stance on this possibly happening?

i'm a bit long in the tooth for the i hate you cardiff scum stance i'll leave that to the kids and boneheads , i think you are as good as up now so will look forward to the derby games , it'll be interesting to see who you bring in because it's pointless saying all that bollocks about doing the double or you'll go straight back down

all i'll say is roll on next season when we do the double over you and you go straight back down you cardiff scum ;)

I believe that Ninian Park was built on a former rubbish tip and that in the early days bit of rubbish sometimes broke through the surface.

So it seems odd that some members wish to have a go at the origins of past or present grounds of other clubs without considering that we are providing more than ample ammunition for them to lob back at us.

Strewth, Waddle. Have I/we touched a raw nerve or something?

There is a saying that "one doth protest too much" and that is certainly relevant to you

The thread started as a 'tongue-in-cheek' piece of trivia and a (pretty obvious to most of us ;) ) JOKE but YOU have decided to make a mountain out of a molehill but if the (cabbage) cap fits, eh? ;)

FFS, get a life and lighten up and if you don't like it stay away from another club's site ;)

If you are bored in the house all day then you could always apply for one of the 200 Virgin Media jobs that are coming to your area in the near future. Mind you, it'll be a long queue   :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

No more responses to YOU ;) I'm bored with you now and the sign 'Gone Fishing Somewhere More Challenging' will follow ANY response to make on THIS thread :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

FFS, it was an interesting (to some) piece of trivia that was posted. The 'cabbages' thing was a natural 'banter' JOKE that followed

The FACT about Ninian Park's origin was well known to me, as I was born a stone's throw from the ground and (as previously stated) have a keen interest in history and trivia of all types ;)

So NOTHING odd about it ;)

Can't say the same of anyone who can't take a joke though and it's not as if any of them would do the same, eh?

Last 'post' on THIS matter ;)
