Cardiff City striker Rudy Gestede

“I am working hard on all aspects, including running. Darren Campbell has helped me so much.

Feb 12 2013

Rudy Gestede, Cardiff City’s big and powerful centre-forward, has had to completely change his playing style over the last 18 months.

The 6ft 4ins Frenchman has worked to adjust the way he runs and is still working on that, while Bluebirds’ coaches have worked hard on his ability in the air and even the way he lands.

“We have worked on all parts of Rudy’s game and it helps massively that he has a great attitude and a hunger to learn and progress,” says manager Malky Mackay.

“He works with Darren Campbell, our running coach, on a regular basis, while he has put in a lot of work on jumping and how he lands.

“Rudy is a player whose presence up front creates danger for defenders and space for team-mates. The promise he has makes us want to keep working with him.”

Gestede, a big friend of Norwich City defender Sebastien Bassong and Sheffield Wednesday’s Reda Johnson, has made 47 first team appearances, the majority of those off the bench, and scored five goals.

The former Metz striker netted the winner against Millwall at home, but knows there is strong competition for places in attack with Craig Bellamy, Fraizer Campbell, Joe Mason, Heidar Helguson, Tommy Smith and Robert Earnshaw all battling for a call-up, while Slovenian Etien Velikonja has not yet made his debut despite banging in 10 goals for the club’s development team.

Gestede hasn’t played since being replaced by Joe Mason at half-time during the goalless draw against Ipswich.

“I want to play football and when the gaffer needs me I will be ready every time,” says Gestede. “I scored against Millwall, but overall I wasn’t happy with my game.

“I am working hard on all aspects, including running. Darren Campbell has helped me so much.

“I feel lighter on the pitch. He helps me on small steps over a short distance and that has been massively beneficial.

“I have been here long enough to understand the Championship and how the gaffer wants me to play to help the team when I am needed.

Good to hear the lads is trying to improve his running and jump timing

Just wait for the abuse..

Okay some people might think he is not good enough but he hasn't done anything bad or spoilt anything for us.

He makes an impact when coming on and he deserved his place against Milwall.. he worked hard and Helguson was not performing to his normal standard..

He works hard and he is part of the group.

At the end of the day he played his part and against Huddersfield he would have made more of an impact than Campbell..

I ain't digging at Campbell but Noone or Gestede should have been brought on.

There was a lot of balls being crossed and with Gestede we could have maybe got 3 points.

Depending on what happens next season I don't know but for now I think we will need him.

Everything we judge him on he even knows himself and I will support the lad to continue to do well.

He won't play again.

Yep, said that after the Ipswich game and I'm going to stick to it.

Before that game Rudy was glorifying Bellamy about how Bellers chased everything. So how did Rudy react to that? Against Ipswich he basically watched their defence play the ball out instead of doing a Bellers by chasing them down. Comparing him to his debut where he chased that ball resulting in the winner for Miller at West Ham to what he does today he has gone back massively. I personally can't see him getting back.

The lad is admitting he needs to work on his game, and admitting he has not been good
enough? I certainly wont slaughter him for that. I'd love every single player who comes
here to be a roaring success - that way we would never be blowing money or wages.
But if Rudy does turn it around (and I'm sorry, but I dont really see it happening) then I
will quite happily eat bucketfuls of humble pie.

But if your seriously suggesting he could have been the difference against Huddersfield? :?

No matter how hard you work rudy sadly you wont be here next season if you want 1st team football as your not a championship player week in week out let alone a prem striker, thats football. :malky:

He's a big lump with potential, I would Stick him out on loan, let him play week in week out and see what he develops into, silly letting him rot in the reserves, as is happening with Etien

i thought he done really well at Leicester when he came on for Helguson, i wouldnt write him off at this stage.

Neither would I.

Re: Rudy Gestede I am working hard on all aspects, including

Mason & Helgusson are ahead of him on the bench.

2 goals is not just enough return for a striker. He's had enough game time to have trebled that tally.

Re: Rudy Gestede I am working hard on all aspects, including

Tue Feb 12, 2013 10:16 am

The only chance he'll get to get near the bench now is if we get injuries to either CB39, Campbell, Heider or Mason,

I think he's destined to finish the season in the development team up front with Etien.

I'd send him out on loan

He shouldnt be on the same training pitch as the first team.

How he got a new two year deal last summer is beyond me.

Poor mans Eddie Johnson.

Might aswell sell him on asap, his wages could be spent on something or someone more useful. Wont make it in this division nevermind the prem.

You can't really slate Rudy. He's honest, genuine and desperate to do well.

Re: Rudy Gestede I am working hard on all aspects, including

he is a proffesional footballer, its up to him,a footballer i know, was dropped from the team,he became the first on the trainning field and the last to leave,he done extra trainning sessions aswell, this is what ruddy has to do,but as it stands he simply is not good enough :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

i have to agree with this...

he needs to learn to dribble first, touch and control, composure, shooting speed, jumping, all the basics of a footballer really, f**k me i cant play golf, so you know what i do, stay the hell of the golf course!

i would loan him out to a league 1 side, give him till the end of the season with them and see if he can develop with regular football.. he's 24 now and really should be coming to his best days....

He did nod in a throw in against Ipswich last season.
