Malky defends Tan's scarf giveaway

Sun Feb 17, 2013 4:43 am

CARDIFF CITY boss Malky Mackay said Vincent Tan’s controversial free scarves were just a way of thanking supporters.

At the behest of their Malaysian backer Tan, the Bluebirds will hand out red scarves to all home fans at the Championship clash with Brighton on Tuesday.

The decision to change the traditional blue home shirt to red has divided supporters with many saying they will turn down the offer of the scarf. But Mackay, whose side sit eight points clear at the top of the Championship, said the giveaway was aimed at galvanising support and he urged everyone to stay behind the club.

“People still feel blue because that is in their hearts. I totally appreciate that,” he said. “They’ve had that for 50 years some of them and tradition is a big part of any football club.

“But we are going forward and that is the important part. Vincent has been nothing short of exceptional when it comes to the backing of this club.

“He’s not only a very wealthy man, but, in terms of business, he’s a very successful man.

“That being the case, his thoughts on the club moving forward were that he wanted to change colour.

“In return for that he would do certain things for the club and that is the trade-off.

“Despite people’s belief in traditions, in the main they have accepted it.

“He’s handing out the scarves because he wants people to get behind the team and that’s it.

“It’s his way of thanking fans for the amount of times they have turned out this year.”

Starting with the visit of Brighton, Mackay’s men have 16 games to get Cardiff into the top flight for the first time in more than half a century. And Mackay praised supporters for turning out despite the rebrand and urged them not to lose faith now.

“To come and have such fervour for the team after what has happened is amazing,” he added.

“People have their thoughts on the situation and that is fine, but what they have done is come and backed the team.”

Yet another Walesonline.co.uk article where they get their basic facts wrong - who writes this rubbish, I assume they're a professional outfit but they don't come across as such.

Starting with Brighton we have 15 games left - 8 home & 7 away.

Quite correct they often get their facts wrong but they do a good coverage of City generally speaking, whereas BBC Wales for instance seem to not realise we have 1 Prem side and another top of the Championship, it's egg, egg, egg then maybe literally 30 secs of football covering both ourselves and the JB's, so I'll not knock the Echo.

If Malky has to come out and defend the commercial decisions of the club and the owner then contrary to his statement most fans clearly have not accepted the rebrand. Most fans have chosen to carry on supporting the team regardless of the colour some have bought red items but most have not so commercially the re rebrand has not sold as well as hoped. The scarf give away is a clumsy admission by the club that fans like the team but not the colour! The scarf give away is simply a bribe not a thank you. I will wear my blue scarf and blue shirt with pride on Tuesday!

18,000 red shirts being sold says you are wrong.

MM was probably asked about it, i dont suppose he just came out with this statement.

18,000 red shirts with many being sold to kids is precisely the point. We would have sold treble that or more had we still be playing in blue at the top of the league.

I don't see why it is so controversial.

I thought the red top had been the best selling shirt ever even before we were top of the league.

I doubt he had to come out and defend. He was probably asked a stupid question which led to the answer.

Blackmail is what it all is and Tan can go and stick his scarf right up his own arse.

The sooner he goes and we get the club we all love back the way it should be the better.

f**k off Tan.

18K red shirts sold - 22K Cardiff fans there yesterday so I guess 70% of us have them hidden under our coats    We will see in the spring how popular red is.

Tan is not daft, he must understand the objections but thinks he will win the fans over with promotion.

I think the core of the objectors are old school and probably left overs from the casual scene so have probably never owned a replica shirt or scarf anyway.

I have swung from anger to reluctant acceptance back to resentment. I think this season of victories has masked the underlying problem but a season of struggle and home defeats and the anger will resurface with vigour.

I agree with Tan that we will soon forget about our recent history by totally forgetting what it was like before Tan and publicly protesting against him and the rebrand.

It's a free scarf, take it or leave it. Go enjoy the game.

Also I suggest people take some earphones and listen to some music at HT incase the entertainment spoils the game for them

18,000 red shirts is a myth generated by the club, mire like a few thousand to kids, plastics and sad fat men who should know that after 16 years of age replica shirts look ridiculous on grown men. Malky will say anything he is told to say by his employers, they pay his wages :ayatollah: :old: :ayatollah:

There was that episode of the Sopranos where Tony has his crew blackmail his daughters soccer coach into not leaving to take up a new college coaching post.

Mind you that ends up with Tony wanting to kill him when they discover the guy has been shagging one of the girls.

No plans for VT to arrange any hits - Are there. :?

No thats Italian style, VT would most likely jump six foot in the air, tear your face off and drench your blue shirt in your own blood turning it red, you know Triad style.

Right... I own a red shirt. Was bought for me as a gift, I've been watching city since 2002/03 (i think?) and I actually quite like the shirt and the badge. Would I prefer the old badge and blue shirt. Of course I would. But it's not happening. Why people have to get in a snapping war over people who buy the shirts or people who accepted it, reluctantly or not. And even worse people who have a go at Tan. I'd rather be watching the 'City play in Red than them not playing at all. Now get on with it. It's a fee scarf, if you don't want one don't take one. End of. Just support the side :ayatollah:

Fully agree
If you do not want the scarf, if you do not like the colour of the scarf, or sceptical of the reason they are being given out ............ just say no thanks as they try to give it to you.
I will be collecting mine thanks.
Against the changes yes, have they done what they said ....... yes so far
I want my team to be competitive and fighting for premiership and thats what i have. :ayatollah:
