Fraizer Campbell justifies £650,000 move to Cardiff City with double strike against Bristol City

Twelve months ago, Fraizer Campbell was rubbing shoulders with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Joe Hart, Gareth Barry and Gary Cahill in the England dressing room. A cameo performance in the 3-2 defeat at the hands of Holland signalled the arrival of the former Manchester United youngster.

Unfortunately, a career at the top of English football’s domestic and international tree failed to materialise in the immediate aftermath as games and goals quickly dried up. Not exactly hero to zero but, having not started a game for Sunderland this season, Campbell left the Stadium of Light last month in a bid to rekindle his career.

Three games into his three-year contract in the Welsh capital and there are signs that not only did Cardiff make the right decision to underpin their promotion bid by signing the former Manchester United youngster but Campbell himself has lost none of the predatory instincts that made him such a respected young striker.

He struck twice in this one-sided contest and had it not been for the former Cardiff goalkeeper Tom Heaton, two would have been three or four. Little wonder the 25-year-old striker was satisfied with his contribution. It is now three goals in as many games for Campbell since his £650,000 move to Cardiff.

“I have not played much football for the last year, so it’s important to get myself back on track. But I am obviously pleased with that,” he said.

“I’ve been given a massive chance to play in a team that’s doing really well. Of course, it’s going to take me a while to get up to speed with the other lads, but I’m already enjoying being part of a very strong squad.”

Cardiff, who have won seven of their last nine league games, were far better than a Bristol City side who find themselves four points from safety and with the small matter of a trip to Crystal Palace on Tuesday nigh.

Admittedly, they played with a level of passion that delighted manager Sean O’Driscoll. However, they failed to match their honest endeavour with quality on the ball. “When you are working with limited possession away from home, you need to be more effective,” O’Driscoll said.

In the end, having been denied for 45 minutes, Campbell executed a sublime finish with the final kick of the first half. His second, courtesy of a long throw from Aron Gunnarsson, 12 minutes after the interval, put the game beyond Bristol City whose only salvation was a late own goal from Cardiff defender Ben Nugent.

Heaton’s focus is, of course, on keeping the Robins in the Championship. However, he found enough time to single out his former Manchester United team-mate Campbell as the reason why Cardiff will bring to an end their 50 year wait for a place in the top flight.

“I know how good he is,” Heaton said. “I think he will make the difference. He was a threat throughout, good in the air, held the ball up well and made runs in behind – and scored two goals. It was an all-round striker’s performance.”

I've got a feeling that young Mr. Campbell is going to turn out to be one of the best signings we've ever made. For 650k, compared to fee's banded about for other strikers we were supposed to be looking out, could be a Malky masterstroke.

Compare it to the 2m euros spent on velikonja. If he stays fit he could be awesome. Not sure him and Bellamy would be enough to keep us in premiership if we get there.

If we get there, when we get there :ayatollah: we would need to strengthen. Malky has built up some solid foundations and has got the lads playing to a system, a system that to me shows he is thinking ahead. Its about not losing the game and in fairness we have taken a battering in some games but have not lost and mostly come out with a win. In the Premier nearly every mistake costs a goal so its a case of cut out the errors which, Saturday apart but shit happens, they have done.

I think we've got enough to stay up with the players currently on the books, nothing spectacular probably lower mid table, but enough to stay up then build from there. Bellamy is not going to be around for ever and even though he seems as fit as he's been for a while his knees won't hold up to playing every premier game. Hopefully the club will offer him a job on the coaching staff as he still has so much to give the game not that I'm writing him off, still got a few seasons left but will probably need to be used less and less. So it'll be up the younger lads to take up the mantle.

F**k me, never though we'd ever be in such a position that I could postulate on how we'd do in the Premier.....

Then again ten years ago, if someone had told me I'd be at Wembley watching us in two cup finals I would have asked for several of the "funny" cigarettes they'd been a smoking

The cost of Campbell is in his contract though so to say 650k is a bit misleading.

He's been given a £5m contract plus fees and bonuses.

What is the point in releasing this thread if nobody is allowed to give a balanced view? Everyone can keep going on about how it was only 650k and a bargain as much as they like and continue to censor the reality of the situation but it doesn't make it true.

Was drogba a bargain for Changai Shenua? He was a free transfer so I assume everyone will think so? Well he was given a massive contract (£15m i believe) and they had to let him go after half a season coz they couldn't afford to pay him anymore. It was cheaper to buy someone for £10m and give them 15k a week.

That's how misleading transfer fees can be. Continue to want to censor the truth if you wish.
