Fraizer Campbell justifies £650,000 move to Cardiff City with double strike against Bristol City
Twelve months ago, Fraizer Campbell was rubbing shoulders with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Joe Hart, Gareth Barry and Gary Cahill in the England dressing room. A cameo performance in the 3-2 defeat at the hands of Holland signalled the arrival of the former Manchester United youngster.
Unfortunately, a career at the top of English football’s domestic and international tree failed to materialise in the immediate aftermath as games and goals quickly dried up. Not exactly hero to zero but, having not started a game for Sunderland this season, Campbell left the Stadium of Light last month in a bid to rekindle his career.
Three games into his three-year contract in the Welsh capital and there are signs that not only did Cardiff make the right decision to underpin their promotion bid by signing the former Manchester United youngster but Campbell himself has lost none of the predatory instincts that made him such a respected young striker.
He struck twice in this one-sided contest and had it not been for the former Cardiff goalkeeper Tom Heaton, two would have been three or four. Little wonder the 25-year-old striker was satisfied with his contribution. It is now three goals in as many games for Campbell since his £650,000 move to Cardiff.
“I have not played much football for the last year, so it’s important to get myself back on track. But I am obviously pleased with that,” he said.
“I’ve been given a massive chance to play in a team that’s doing really well. Of course, it’s going to take me a while to get up to speed with the other lads, but I’m already enjoying being part of a very strong squad.”
Cardiff, who have won seven of their last nine league games, were far better than a Bristol City side who find themselves four points from safety and with the small matter of a trip to Crystal Palace on Tuesday nigh.
Admittedly, they played with a level of passion that delighted manager Sean O’Driscoll. However, they failed to match their honest endeavour with quality on the ball. “When you are working with limited possession away from home, you need to be more effective,” O’Driscoll said.
In the end, having been denied for 45 minutes, Campbell executed a sublime finish with the final kick of the first half. His second, courtesy of a long throw from Aron Gunnarsson, 12 minutes after the interval, put the game beyond Bristol City whose only salvation was a late own goal from Cardiff defender Ben Nugent.
Heaton’s focus is, of course, on keeping the Robins in the Championship. However, he found enough time to single out his former Manchester United team-mate Campbell as the reason why Cardiff will bring to an end their 50 year wait for a place in the top flight.
“I know how good he is,” Heaton said. “I think he will make the difference. He was a threat throughout, good in the air, held the ball up well and made runs in behind – and scored two goals. It was an all-round striker’s performance.”
