" No cause for panic, says Malky Mackay "

Bluebirds boss believes the race for Premier League promotion could well go all the way to the wire.

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has no concerns over eroding lead

Feb 22nd 2013

Malky Mackay insists he has no concerns about Cardiff City’s lead at the top of the Championship being cut.

And the Bluebirds boss believes the race for Premier League promotion could well go all the way to the wire.

After a 2-0 defeat to Brighton in midweek, Cardiff are now five points clear of second-placed Hull and eight ahead of Watford in third with a game in hand over both clubs.

The lead had been 11 points, but Mackay knows when they face Wolves on Sunday if the Tigers have won the previous day at Bolton, they might only be two points to the good.

But if supporters are nervous about the situation, the manager is taking things in his stride and keeping faith in his players to complete the task.

“It’s nice to have a cushion at any time in the season and you would rather be at the top than playing catch-up, but it will be tight, it’s always going to be tight,” said Mackay. “We really just need to concentrate on what is in front of us.

“It’s far too early to look at your points differential. That comes with three or four games to go and is not something for right now.

“I’ve no doubts about the mental strength of this squad. The way they have performed throughout the season has shown what they are made of.”

The reverse to Brighton was Cardiff’s first defeat in 10 league games and only the second time they had lost at home all season.

It was a frustrating night for the home side with plenty of chances going begging, but as they head to Molineux, Mackay insisted there would be no need to lift his players.

“I don’t think the lads are in need of lifting. If we had not created chances against Brighton, if we had not played well and been beaten by that scoreline then probably they would have needed lifting going into the weekend,” said Mackay.

“I think in the cold light of day when you look at the number of chances we had, the amount of possession we had in their half and the way we played it means the players will still be confident about where they are right now and the way they are playing.

“In the last couple of games the chances we created are encouraging more than anything else.”

Mackay heads to Molineux looking to heap more misery on new Wolves boss Dean Saunders.

The former Wales striker and Wrexham manager left Doncaster for the Midlands last month, but is yet to earn a win after seven games in charge.

Wanderers lie third off the bottom of the table, currently, two points from safety and Mackay admitted his opposite number on Sunday was facing a tough job.

“Wolves are a well established club and one which was a Premier League club,” said the Scot.

“Along with Bolton and Blackburn they were probably seen as one of the big clubs in this division this year because they had just come down,” said Mackay.

“I suppose it is unsettling when a new manager comes in and things are changed around again. There’s a settling in period for Dean now. It’s obviously not an easy time of the season to be settling in because there’s 15 games to go.

“It will take him time to put his own stamp on the club, it always does for any new manager coming in.”

But Mackay knows he and his side are going to need to be at the top of their game against Wolves if they are to avoid losing back-to-back games for only the second time this season.

Mackay added: “We know it’s going to be a tough game at Molineux. It’s a big stadium and they’ve got a big fan base so we are expecting a difficult afternoon as always.

“But if we perform to the standards we know we can and perform the way we have been performing recently then we are in with a very good chance.”

I'm not a long-term supporter like many on here, I had my ST for only 2 or 3 years. At the time I craved premier league football as much as anyone, but I never thought anything like the rebrand would happen. I've been through play-offs and cup finals, all of them heartbreaks as it turned out, but in hindsight I'd take that a hundred times over rather than change the club's traditions to this fake red.

Or sober up at least. If mods could remove my posts that'd be good.

Hull vs Cardiff last game of the season. Could be down to that game to win the league. That would be an awesum day, provided we would finish second if we lost. :ayatollah:

People need to stop f*cking panicking, the tension does NOT help.

8 points dropped at home all season the lads deserve our backing not moan, groans and f*cking boos.

Our fans get very unsettled if we aren't 1-0 up after 20 minutes which is a disturbing trend. It's pretty quiet during the game nowadays itself so you have to think that the players can only here the fans moan and boo which must have an adverse affect on performance.
