Bristol City fan in peace...re: "Cardiff"

Hi all,

I was in the away end last Sat to watch us (Bristol City) get beat. Nothing unusual there. If you don't go up this season, you never will. Anyway, can't see you blowing it this time.

I just felt compelled to write about what's happening with your club. Now, I know this has been debated and discussed hundreds of times already this season by all of you, and I see there are loads of threads dedicated to the rebrand.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to why a great club with a great tradition (god, that hurt) has meekly surrended to new owners. Well, actually I know (some) of the reasons: saved you from bankruptcy, promised you jewels, promotion etc. But, think about this: what owner comes in to a club, says they're planning on changing your home kit's colour, your badge, then (after protests), decides against, only to go back on their word a few weeks later?

Surely, you all must know that when you're playing in the Premiership, you'll be sitting on red seats, in red stands? Blue will have been completely washed out. You'll officially be known as "Cardiff."

I understand why some of you don't care. For now. You're winning, you're top, on the verge of promotion. I just found out that you were last in the top division in 1962. That's a long time ago. I imagine many of you on here would have never have witnessed you playing top flight football. When my team was in the top division, I was one!

But, what else will owners who have little interest in your traditions and history be planning next? I imagine ticket prices will go up considerably. Out of interest, for those who have renewed season tickets, did they go up in price??

What your owners are doing is extremely worrying. I know some of you are thinking "what the f**k do you care, you tractor driving t**t?" I care because, slowly but surely, owner after owner is coming along to Cardiff, Nottingham Forest, Leeds, Blackburn, Birmingham, Portsmouth etc etc. and destroying the soul, the integrity, of the game we all love.

I don't understand why so many of you seem happy to wear those red scarves without so much as a murmur. Or why protest has been so muted. Well, I do. You're so near the Premiership, there's little appetite to make a fuss. But, what happens if you go up, and then come straight back down? Or worse? Staying in the Premiership is getting harder each season.

I also don't understand why some people, who have refused to wear red/accept the rebrand, are being intimidated. Why??

There really is more to life than success. I know you've waited decades for this, but you're not doing the cause of football (which quite frankly is nearer the gutter now than it's ever been) any good.

I've not registered with this forum, and then written this, just for the sake of it. I'm genuinely concerned about what's happening to football. I'm not saying boycott matches. I realise for those of you who are season ticket holders, this would be too much. Especially this season, and with what probably lies in store next.

I also realise that many of you are happy to accept the rebrand, wear the red scarf, and do what else your new owner says. But, for those that don't, make your voices heard. March, stay behind after home games. For those of you who go to away games, (I imagine you're the hardcore fans), do the same. Don't buy the merchandise. Chant. Hold your blue scarves up proudly.

That's all I wanted to say. I expect I'll probably get told to F-off by some of you. Others may agree with me, but still tell me to mind my own business.

Finally, as for not being "allowed" to protest at home games (have I got that right??)??? What the hell? What kind of club stops its supporters from making their voice heard?

I honestly don't think we would let this happen at Bristol City. We have an excellent supporters' trust and a very responsive club who often listen to us and read our fans' forum. Then again, we're not top of the league...

I can't really say best of luck for promotion, because I wouldn't mean it. Instead, best of luck to those who are intent on fighting this hideous takeover of everything your club stands for.

wow, another re-brand thread.

This is all brand new and never heard any of that before on this sight.

Not interested what other clubs fans think as it has zero effect on them.

Society is weak, fuelled by consumerism, greed and money. Football is a part of society.

Well put, but unfortunately you like all other club fans only see it black & white? We wouldnt let it happen ect ect wll sorry
Those clubs were not in our position, and those who have went into administration! We havnt,
No club fans have managed to stop owners doing what they want, even man u fans couldnt stop glaziers from pilaging there clubs financially landing them with massive debt. Just hope your club doesnt find itself in our predicamant
Then you will see what matters most club or survival? as that may have been our choice if tan didnt invest.

Don't hate the colour red at all. Quite a nice colour actually. :thumbright:

Just don't think it's right for Cardiff City.

Thanks for your comments. It does hurt, but it could happen to any club, and in the future it will happen to a few more.
Football is following society into a money grabbing, don't care about others mentallity.
Our club has been sanitised, with 100's being placed on banning orders, bubbled to away games, not allowed to stand or chant (offending people) etc.
The chanting between fans is part of the game, but now no longer allowed it seems, so atmosphere disappears.
New fans will pay to watch in silence, as if they were at home watching on tele.
Players have become bigger than the clubs.

The whole thing stinks.
To me the premier league is not the promised land, as things will only get worse. As far as I am concerned it is a way of Cardiff City getting debts wiped out without going in to administration. Then I would be happy to return to the championship (more competitive games and interesting places to go) and back to blue.

Sorry, don't believe for one minute that you are a Brrrsol City fan and (more so) that they (Brrrsol) wouldn't snap the fingers off anyone who could relieve them of the massive debts they owe to their own Chairman and lead them away from their current position ;)

It's always easy to state from afar (in the unlikely event that is what you are doing) and all this post does is add to the growing list of 'threads' from people with an agenda that doesn't realy take into account the REAL alternatives ;)

That said, i am a little envious of the staunch 'anti-red at all costs' because they obviously have nothing more important in life to worry about and that must be Utopia ;) :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Dear Mr Gummage
Two reasons
Reason 1 promotion to the Premiership.
Reason 2 after you are relegated we wont have to play yourselves in a very long time.

A very good observation, i'm a bit suspicious that you are a bristol fan mind, (apologies if you are, but there are quite a few knobheads on here opening new accounts) so, asuming you are i will try and answer some of your questions, after our bottle job in the play off final against blackpool, Vincent Tan could have easily walked away because his initial investment was'nt that big, he carried on and now his invested / loan is huge, a little while before VT became the major invester Cardiff City had been taken to court by HMRC on two seperate occasions for non payment of paye, (risdale was chairman) a third winding up order was also pending, we had a transfer embargo imposed on the club and, ridsdale had mortgaged off the next £3.5 million of transfer money to Ray Ranson, basically, we were dying a slow death, since VT's investment we have been nowhere near any courts and financially we are now up to date on all monthly costs, unfortunately, it has come at a cost, (rebranding) when it was first mentioned in the summer nobody wanted anything to do with it, the malaysians then decided to shelve their plans and look for other investment to help them out, (the plans were to invest £100 million on debt, stadium expansion, new training facilities and new players) most people panicked and thought he was pulling out, (something that we will never know either way) he the decided to go ahead with his plans and so far he has kept us financially afloat and also invested heavily in our squad. The majority of fans would still prefer to see us play in blue (not including tuesday night after the free hand outs) but feel we had no choice other than to take his investment, if he had walked away (there is no proof either way that he would of or not) the club would have been dead in the water, the CEO at the time said we were weeks away from adminstration at best, liquidation at worst, now how far the rebranding is going to go nobody knows apart from VT, it's very sad to see city fans split as they are especially when we are on the brink of making the promised land, (hopefully) in the ideal world it would have been great to see a local business man invest in the club, but, apart from VT there was no one coming forward to help out, administration would have been the best of our options available (something your club has been through in the past) but it could have been much worse than that, of course, this is only my opinion of what has gone on, other people will disagee and have their own opinions, but i hope you can at least appreciate it was'nt a straight forward position we found ourselves in.

As predicted, those who don't see what the fuss is, point to yourselves being saved from the financial brink. And I completely understand this. Who wouldn't turn down the chance of redemption? But, just because the owners have invested money in the club, doesn't mean you have to sit back and do everything they say.

This is a case of, come back in 5 or 10 years, and see where your club is. If the current owners are still there and most of the fans happy, then any opposition to the rebrand would probably have evaporated. My gut feeling: you'll be regretting their involvement at some point in the not too distant future.

Why? Because your owners, or the motley crew at Forest, or Blackburn, or Man U or Chelsea, don't give two hoots about these clubs. They're a play thing for people with a ridiculous amount of money, who have no loyalty or interest in the fans and the club. Fans have to start looking beyond the immediate future.

I wonder how much Cardiff fans would accept in return for top flight football? £50 a ticket for a home game? The slow eradication of any kind of Welsh identity from the club?

Again, I understand that the owners saved you from the brink. But that also means they're going to want more in return. In fact, feel they're owed it and can do what they want. I hope I'm wrong.

Yes, I am a Bristol City fan!

Great post. I understand a lot of fans will sort of accept the rebrand as long as we do well which i understand but not enough has been done by the so called anti reds. A lot of people just sit there and moan, or voice their opinions on here and that's it.
I think a lot of clubs that have been taken over and will be taken over in the future won't moan as long as the clubs future is secure and success is delivered.
I just don't see how you can be blue through and through and all of a sudden buy red home kits knowing that we aren't really blue anymore. A red away kit we wouldn't moan about, we've had one in the past.
i Know Cardiff city will always be Cardiff city and I have been down the city for most of my life but if even more rebranding takes place then we will be extinct.
Cardiff of malaysia flying high in the premier league.

All that you have said in this post is basically what is going on week in, week out in the english premier league, owners that don't care about the fans, high prices for tickets etc, it's the league that every football club are striving to play in, or are bristol city different????

Bristol Robin wrote:Hi all,

If you were in exactly the same circumstances as us you would have done exactly the same. Why do you think one group of people would behave differently to another? We both have a similar fan base...though many more of ours have been turning up and supporting our Club for quite a few years than yours do. Do you think you are morally superior or something? Explain why you would act so differently....evidence please Robin!!! :ayatollah:

The'i can't believe you rolled over and let this happen'seems to be popular angle from rival fans lately

A)The Malaysians didn't just walk in and give us a rebrand. They've been pumping cash into the club for over three years

B)Apart from a select amount of football clubs steeped in honours and long term support from a huge fanbase, the majority of football clubs in the same situation would have been as powerless as we are with it.

This is all brand new and never heard any of that before on this sight.

Not interested what other clubs fans think as it has zero effect on them.

the guy is giving his oppinion and as for not interested in what other clubs fans think yes you're right it has zero effect on them same as we would have had no effect on some of the clubs who have fallen by the wayside clubs like chester wimbledon blackburn future clubs will be man city when they get bored and stop pumping the money in chelsea same reason eventually he'll give up look at leeds forest clubs are changing hands to the money men who one day walk away jack walker put his money into blackburn for the love of the club unfortunatly no longer with us and blackburn no longer premier, portsmouth foreign owners came and went now not even a championship side
let the fans voice their opinion won't be long and the premier will become a european super league where the money men will run it and god forbid that day will come

i used 2 go everywhere watching cardiff in 80's and 90's when we were shite(on the pitch),i had some of my best times in my life in those day's,i agree will alot that u said, the only time i go these day's,is if i haven't done the ground(everton and man u grounds left 2 do with the city, then i can retire).i hate the new ground,no atmosphere and ground full of plastic's,i miss that old lady(ninian park).i love ccfc, they r in my blood, the 1 thing i know, they won't alway's be owners of ccfc,1 day we will be back playing in blue and have our old badge back, foreign owners takeover, they change whatever they like, but they have no idea of our tradition or history. If they wanted a club that plays in red,why didn't they buy ur lot
