It's National Air Traffic Services who are refusing to let planes fly not the airlines. It has been proven that this stuff is dangerous when mixed with Aircraft engines. It is unprecendented for this action to take place but it is the right call.
There are still planes flying but under 4000 feet I believe.

this only affects jet, ramjet and scramjet engines, props and turbo props are unaffected.
