Greatest Managers

Mine Brian Clough, I loved him, straight to the point, no bull shit and made Forest from a small Club in to EUROPEAN GIANTS and English Champions.

Then Fergie and Mourhino :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Clough for me too.

Absolute genius.

He lost his head in the end though.

Wonder if he could have done it in todays climate though where money dominates football.

In fairness to durban he was a really nice bloke who cared about the club (i spent easter 1984 on a training camp with him). He had a shite budget and the club had no youth policy to speak of (Mel Rees RIP was there at the time as was Wayne Curtis who played a few games). Durban put his hand into his pocket (2k) with a few fans and Curran Oil (Craig Burgin) to buy Phil Brignull . With a better budget Durban might have done better.

He was a really nice bloke-i remember him, Tim O'Connor, Francis Ford, Mel Rees and Jamie King. Stan Montgomery and Len (Williams-i think) were the Youth team coaches. Wayne played right back and wide right if i remember correctly?

No contest.

Old Clough's management techniques are the subject of numerous PhD studies throughout the world, his forensic skills defy belief

I for one praise allah, buddah, god, jesus, SAM, Claire and the rest that he didn't get the England job. They would have won the World cup many times. England had Clough, we got Toshack!

Is he still involved in football-i remember him scoring a great chip v blackpool in front of 2500. I think Burrows sent him on a free to Brecon Corries. I might be talking bollocks though

Cloughie was the best by far.

big shout out for Barry Fry. remember that documentary when he threw that cup of tea at one of the players in dressing room.
Running up and down touch line and if i remember rightly took a second mortgage out to lend peterborough some cash.
He is one proper mad b*stard and he swears a lot too.

Ian Holloway is a nut job too I`d like to see him at the city one day.

Neil Warnock seems passionate as well

Dont forget the 32 year old in charge of bournemouth.

Re: YOUR ALL TIME

Clough, Paisley, Beckenbauer or Fergie.

Clough because he was a great manager taking a small club like Forest to the European Cup twice and because he really didn't give a toss about the establisnhment. Be interesting to see if he could doi it in this day and age though.

Paisley for the fact he carried on where Shankly left off and turned Liverpool into one of the grestest European teams of all time, something which really sticks in the throats of Man United fans.

Beckenbauer as he is the only manager/coach to have won the World Cup as a player and a manager/coach.

Ferguson as he has turned United into the most powerful and successful club of the Premiership era.

Re: YOUR ALL TIME

In my time I would say Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho are by far the two best. Guus Hiddink is a personal favourite of mine because he's been successful in so many areas and regions of the game. Marcello Lippi for the same reason.

Re: YOUR ALL TIME

Well you gotta go by trophies in Cabinets and I mean European Trophies - so it has to be Fergie, Shankly, Paisley and Clough. While I believe Mourinho is probably the best manager along with Pep Guardiola of the modern era they have a long way to go before they match the exploits of the aforementioned managerial greats.

The win to games ratio stats for the greats are as follows:-

Ferguson 57.46%
Shankly 49.95%
Paisley 56.12%
Clough 45.03%

The current crop of top managers win to games ratios are as follows:-

Mourinho 66.89% (fabulous but would like to see him over a longer period)
Pep Guardiola 76.52% (but you would expect nothing else manages greatest tean in the world)

All these stats are at the very highest level of football.

One guy who I think deserves a mention would be Jock Stein. To take a team of local lads from Glasgow and win the European Cup is nothing short of a miracle and he very nearly did it a second time falling at the final hurdle. - his record was - European Cup 1967, European Cup finalists 1970, 10 Scottish League Championships, 8 Scottish Cups (finalists in another 3) and 6 Scottish League Cups (finalists in another 7). Under Stein's leadership Scotland reached the 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals -a truly remarkable record.

Compare this to our very own Dave Jones win to Games ratio of 40.83% a respectable stat but not a great one and the majority of which would be at a lower level than the top.

Dave Jones Managerial record at the top level i.e Premier League with Sothampton and Wolverhampton is a very poor 39 victories from 136 matches i.e a win ratio of 28.68%, which suggests to me he has to improve massively as a manager at the top level if he is to keep us up if we go up. My view is the same as it has always been he would not be my choice as manager, he is simply not good enough at the highest level which is why West Ham have given up any interest in him as they are now safe in the premier League. Had they come down they would have poached him from us if we failed to get promotion.

Re: YOUR ALL TIME

I think one of the most underrated managers around is Roy Hodgson, he had a bad time at Blackburn but was succesful in Skandinavia, did well at Inter and is doing a fantastic job for Fulham. But I would go for Clough and Ferguson although I f*cking hate Fergie witha passion you cant argue with his trophy cabinet!!
