CITY FANS URGED TO RUN FUNDRAISERS FOR FRED KEENOR
An appeal has gone out to Cardiff City fans to organise their own events to raise cash for the Fred Keenor statue appeal.
Phil Nifield, spokesman for the Fred Keenor appeal committee, said: “We have a series of fundraisers planned during the rest of the year but we also need the help of City fans.
“We’d like to see supporters hold events – perhaps a jumble or car boot sale, quizzes and even coffee mornings. Fans who are taking part in fun runs or marathons might also consider making FK Statue their good cause.
“We need to collect around £85,000 to make the statue to Fred and the the 1927 FA Cup winning team a reality. We are off to a good start but want as many people as possible to muck in and help out.
“The committee is really pleased that several individuals have already made donations for which we are very grateful but we want to keep the momentum going.”
Phil Nifield also urged businesses across South Wales, particularly those with strong links to Cardiff City, to contribute to funds.
“Fred was both a Cardiff City and a Wales legend so we want to see everyone get behind it.”
Bucket collections, an auction, the sale of statue miniatures and specially designed pin badges are among the fundraising initiatives proposed.
In a poll last year fans chose a statue design by Roger Andrews, the Llantwit Major artist. Roger created the superb tribute to Sir Tasker Watkins, which now stands outside the Millennium Stadium.
A prominent site on a triangular piece of land between the Grandstand and the Canton Stand outside the Cardiff City Stadium has been chosen as the location for the tribute. Cardiff City have been extremely supportive of the appeal.

Shame someone didn't think of doing a bucket collection on the recent protest march.
That aside I'm sure this MB could come up with something like an old car boot organised by Mrs Ramsgate or a Monkey Facing painting competition organised by Baz?

How many Macmillan nurses could 100,000 pounds pay for, and how many kids with incurable conditions could we send on holidays for that amount of money, am I the only one who thinks that amount of money is obscene for a statue.

I have said this before, 100 grand does seem extortionate especially in todays present climate,if business's want to support this then fair enough but other fund raising events surely would have more credence if they were for needy causes. When we had the Rams we did the original bring a pound to the ground and raised £13,000 for the Tsunami, we also did a bucket collection for restoration of the graves and headstones that had fallen in to disrepair at Aberfan and we raised £4,000.
People will muck in and support worthy causes, but personally I don't feel that a 100 grand statue falls into that category.

There will be a bucket collection at the Home Leg of the Play-Offs but obviously we need to organise plenty of events, hence this appeal.
The statue should cost around £85,000 which I would agree is a fair amount of money. But surely no-one thinks that the money would go to the health service, education or whatever if didn't go on this statue. It just doesn't work like that. We know things are tight in the country but let's see between the doom and gloom.
Don't fans think that it is worth recognising a true City Legend like Fred Keenor? Swansea have Ivor Allchurch, Leeds have Bremner, Southampton, Ipswich etc etc and plenty of other clubs have their heroes. Are we second class to the Jacks - I don't think so.?Also rugby is recognised in what is a football city (Gareth Edwards).
If we are going to do a statue - which will be one-and-a-half times life size - we also need to do it properly, a quality job, hence the cost. Allchurch in Swansea is only life size.
The statue will be an excellent focal and meeting point at the ground.
