The definition of a plastic fan

Thu Apr 29, 2010 5:54 pm

On here, and on CCMB for that matter, there is much mention of 'plastic fans', but what is a plastic fans and how do you know one if you see him/her?

To me, someone walking round Cardiff city centre with a Premiership top of their choice doesn't automatically qualify them for plastic status. Nor, really, does sitting in a pub on a sunday afternoon/Tuesday night cheering on their Premiership team of their choice. Not if they are watchin g in the ground for the rest of their games.

I always class a plastic as never, or very rarely, having set foot in the ground of their 'beloved' Premiership team. If you see one in Cardiff city centre and he doesn't go, then he's a plastic, he surely isn't if he goes to all their games, surely?

I'd say we also have our fair share of such supporters and it baffles me how many people make the excuse that they can't get tickets for City home games when they never really try. And the relative scarcity of tickets at some Premiership grounds is a hindrance to some people going to watch games at their clubs. Top Premiership clubs have more die-hard fans than we do, just look at the support Man United get to bear this fact out. And some of their animals have been going for years, home and away. And some people are born into their clubs, even premiership clubs.

So, next time you think "look at that plastic wanker" when you see a bloke in a Liverpool shirt ambling along Queen Street on a Wednesday afternoon, maybe you shouldn't jump to conclusions

You could make an argument that I'm partly plastic even though I attend every home game, because I hardly ever go to away.

Of course that won't stop me bombing down the M4 on May 22 probably at the expense of a fan who might have attended six or seven away games.

To me its someone who claims to support a club but never goes to see them. That simple really.

I attend every home game but this season away games have had to be put on hold, I've only done Villa and Chelsea, whereas I usually go to 9 or 10 aways other seasons. I don't consider myself a plastic, though, and the last City game I watched in a pub was Bristol City away, when i was on a date with a laydee  She wasn't impressed when I jumped up when Ross scored when we were in the middle of a little chat

Exactly the point I was making. You can't always judge people, even though some do

For me a plastic is someone who can afford it and has the time to go but never attends a game.

I might be wrong about my definition of a plastic but something i have noticed over the years is you don't see to many plastic Rochdale,Darlington or Hartlepool fans or come to that anyone outside the established prem clubs.

or even if they go. Why?? When they have no reason to support them.

Live hundreds of miles away is dedication some would argue but it just makes them glory hunters instead of plastics.

I know what you mean. I support them because I have seen them play.......once. Does not work that way does it?

Carl made a good point about those not being able to afford or have the time to go. Cant argue against that. They could be genuine fans but simple cant go. Who are we to judge?
