please read boys help needed!!!

in work today, a new lad started with us as a labourer. really nice polite guy. 24yrs old.
here`s where he needs help...he has just finished with the army after serving 5yrs. served in iraq and afghan, he`s returned home cos of medical problems, and has very little money in the bank.
He is way down the pecking order list for council house and has been put up in a "scruffy hostel full of foreigners".
Any advice for him lads????
typically i find this wrong seen as the immigrants get everything that they want.
really nice boy and i felt so sorry for him today. On another matter , he was telling me stories out there and it is shocking, especially the lack of body armour, they even made some boys pay for their own. he was also telling me that they had to retreat into a old house and were dug in for 5 DAYS cos they couldnt get no back up out to them.

If you go on Gopetition there might be a search button where you can search for this petition and then post the link and we will all sign it. If not go on facebook and search for a group complaining about it and see if they have one.

He has a job , rent privately.

When my mate left the army after 5 yrs, they found a house for him!!!! in a street that nearly 95% of the residents are all ex armed serviceman, all he pays is the rent and bills. and if anything goes wrong - one phone call and they come out and fix what ever! i think this was because he left at the same time as his mrs, who was having a baby. Not sure what your friend could do - but i'd pay a visit to the citizens advice Bearau?

Cardiffs multi-cultural heritage?

I agree that the government treats ex servicemen badly but going on about immigrants won't help matters.
All that does is encourage numpties like EDL to jump on the bandwagon and stir up racial hate.
It's got to be better to concerntrate on pressurising those in power to treat all ex servicemen with dignity
without resorting to blaming others who don't have the power to change things.

Has he made a homelessness application? If he has then he should be in a council (or social housing) run hostel, which are of a very good standard. Moaning about foreigners or immigrants won't make a bit of difference as they don't get preference its just they are more aware of how to use the system because of the support organisations which exisit for them.

If he has made an application then tell him to follow the rules (stay every night at the hostel and get back there on time) and within 8 weeks he should be rehoused. If not then get him to make an application ASP.

Its been a good few years since I left the forces but I went to Marland House in town (right by the central station) spoke to someone in there about housing and was told that I'd go straight to the top of the list. BUT my circumstances where a bit different, I had a missus and young son at the time. Looking back I should've taken up there offer and got a council house but at the time I'd already sorted myself with a private landlord.

Not sure what the situation is nowadays but Im almost sure that Marland House is now just a call centre for "Connect2Cardiff" My advice would be to speak to the local councillor he/she should be able to help and point your mate in the right direction. Or it might be worth contacted SSAFA, RBL or other ex-services associations.

what i meant was it SEEMS that they get a lot more help than someone that has helped to defend our country from would-be terrorism so the likes of you and i and our children can sleep that little bit better at night.
its just the guy needs some help and it seems that he isnt receiving it or any advice at all. he is a young un and i thought coming on here for some advice would maybe benefit the lad.

I work for the YMCA housing association at one of their hostels for the homeless.
All you need do is go to Marland House in Central Square and register as homeless. They can then refer you to us and we can take you in. If you're unemployed the council pay for your room and board but if you're working it's expensive (£200 +) so maybe no help for your mate. Apart from room and board there are housing workers to help you find accomodation. Most residents move on to a flat of their own within a few months.
