About 15 Cardiff youth and about the same Southampton youth had 2 minute punch up in a park, no one else there but a cctv camera above them.
They went to prison for it and no one hurt at all.

I can't believe I'm replying to Claude but here goes.

Claude, lets consider a drink driver who kills someone whilst pissed at the wheel. He quite rightly goes to jail and he gets a ban from driving. Both the driving ban and time behind bars start at the same time. Many times you'll find these killers coming out of jail and able to get straight back behind the wheel and drive again, simply because their ban timed out whilst in prison. The law sees them as served their punishment for killing someone even though the family and friends of the victim continue to suffer. They could even see the killer out driving again and again or even pissed again and driving. The reason why the system is like this is because it's built on reform, not punishment.
It seems that if you kill someone then you can be reformed and one day return to society. However this doesn't apply to football fans. A life ban is a long time. Most teenagers behave in a way that they will find embarrassing in just a few years time. How can you hold someone responsible for their actions they did 10, 15 or even 20 years ago?

Maybe, just maybe, it will make others think (if they're capable of such a complex process) before indulging in violent behaviour at a football match.

most sensible post on here, I agree that when there is football involved that the consequences are far worse. When I was in the Army I reguarly got nicked for brawling out on the piss but never got charged with everything. If I behaved like that at the football then I would have got banned and locked up. In Claude Blue's defence, I thought this board was against sniping. He was goaded into making a reply then told to f**k off when he did. Doesnt sound like an anti-sniping policy to me.
