Dave Jones in the dark over Joe Ledley dealCARDIFF City manager Dave Jones has admitted he was left in the dark about Joe Ledley’s contract negotiations and his controversial move to Scottish giants Celtic.
Jones confirmed Ledley’s comments at the weekend by the 32-times capped Welsh international that his manager was not kept fully in the loop over negotiations or interest from other clubs.
Jones accepts that matters he surprisingly knew little about have left him without his most prized asset and still trying to find compensation for a player who was with the Bluebirds since the age of nine.
“There are a lot of things that went on that even I didn’t know about, which I find hard to believe being the manager of the football club,” said Jones.
“But Joe has made his decision to go to Celtic. We would have loved him to have signed for us but he has made his bed now and he has to go and lie in it.
“We wish him nothing but the best. We have now got the compensation rule and we have to try and get some money for a player who has been at this football club since the age of nine.
“We made the best offer possible for Joe. We thought he wanted Premiership football, but he has decided to go to Scotland. I can’t knock that, that’s his decision and we wish him nothing but the best.
“It’s just sad that we couldn’t have sorted this out well over 12 months ago because he’s a Cardiff boy and I feel his heart is still at Cardiff and he would have loved to have signed.
“But, by all accounts, there was never an offer made, or a substantial offer which would have kept him. We did do that, but in Joe’s eyes it was probably a bit too late. He’s not our player now.”Jones’ relationship with former chairman Peter Ridsdale was tested to its maximum on several occasions, especially last season when the club were in and out of the high court over unpaid tax bills, which in turn affected the club’s ability to bring in new players.
Jones told Sky Sports: “I had a working relationship with Peter. It worked pretty well but you find things out when people leave that are a little bit annoying.”
“I’m just looking to the future now and what has gone on has gone on.
“I have new people in, a new board, and I am working for them now. I just need to get on with my job and do my best like I have always done in my management career.”
City continue to work under a transfer embargo – a direct result of their financial problems – and, while Jones has been linked with several clubs in the summer, he says he’s ready to start again with Cardiff.
“I’m committed to Cardiff. In football you never know what’s around the corner, but while I am here and employed by this football club I will give everything.
“While at any football club I give 100% and nothing less. I have done that ever since I walked into the job here and every other football club I have been employed at.”
