Brillant player, was Alex also a fantastic character way from snooker. 5 day benders with Oliver Reed, head butting tournament officials etc

And threatening to get Dennis Taylor shot by the IRA.

RIP Alex, you introduced snooker to the masses.

i always found that story to be strange as I thought Higgins was a protestant - The club they were paying tribute to him in Belfast had union Jacks in it. So I presume it was not the IRA but the UDA or some other paramilatry organisation from the other side of the divide that Alex claimed to have links to.

Another great sportsman who had total natural talent - a genius at his sport - But like many genius had a self destruct button and iot killed him in the end and the past few years could not hacve been pleasant fo him. But the previous 50 odd years were a rollercoaster of extremes.

I have read a biography of Higgins and there are som,e pretty wild stories about drinking gambling and a few birds as well.

RIP Sir Hurricane - The reason I watched snooker.
