Wed Jul 28, 2010 8:16 am

I saw a topic on CCMB regarding this. I cant be assed trying to find my login details to respond, so I thought I would start a thread on here.

What do you guys think?

My feeling is now is not the right time, we don't need anymore eu migration during this difficult period.

If they do enter the EU, will they be switching to the Euro, or sticking with the Lira? If they switch to the Euro, could this cause problems for them with existing debts to the country?

The positives of them joining the EU are great mind. To have a Muslim country in the EU would be a huge advantage when it comes to fighting terrorism and radicalism.

Also stategcally, Turkey is well placed. So having bases there would be great. Not to mention their huge army which would be of great help to the EU.

Turkey is an important ally and one day they will definitely join the EU. If the west is to finally make friends with the East then it has to start with economic co-operation.

That said I doubt the time is right now for them to join because of the severe economic problems every country is experiencing since the banking crisis and this country especially couldn’t sustain another massive wave of migration.

Finally I find David Cameron’s behaviour both in Turkey and India contradictory as he seems to want to encourage immigration from both countries to the UK which conflicts with his election promise to curb immigration.

Mate, I think everything he has done since then has conflicted with his election promises. I really don't trust him. Think I would have more faith in the Riddler being PM.

I am up for this totally. Turkey is a great country. A country that has the best of the Muslim religion and keeps out the fundamentalism. They could be a link between the Muslim World and the EU and could help stabilise the World.

We can't put a cap on EU immigration.

Why they want to join the EU I don't know. They must be off their heads. Anyone with any sense want out not in. Joining the EU destroys your country and takes away all of it's identity. Turkey is one of the only places where you can go on the beach and no worry about getting mobbed by "lookie, lookie men" flogging cheep watches and belts. You can kiss that peace goodbye for a start.
On the plus side though it would force the Greeks to sort out the issues with the Turkish part of Cyprus. Perhaps the rest of Europe would then be forced to admit that part of the island exists. That's where the best beaches are but you can't book an holiay there because we pretend the Turkish part of Cyprus doesn't exist and we can only go to the Greek parts.
