Bluebirds want Burton cup-tie postponed
Aug 1 2010 by Tim Lewis, Wales On Sunday
Add a commentRecommend CASH-STRICKEN Cardiff City want to postpone their Carling Cup clash with Burton Albion... because they don’t have enough players!
The first round tie on August 11 clashes with an international friendly week and Bluebirds boss Dave Jones admits he has a player-crisis looming. With summer signing Tom Heaton yet to be registered because of the club’s transfer embargo, the Bluebirds expect to be without a goalkeeper for the home tie, as David Marshall will be on Scotland duty.“My next problem is I’ve got players called up to internationals and I’ve only got 15 professionals left here,” said Jones.“I’ve got one goalkeeper going off to Scotland, so what do I do there?“The Football League are telling me I’ve got to play, but how can I play without players?“They are saying we can’t cancel the first round of the League Cup, but it’s crazy. “The international games are friendlies, but I can’t pull my players out – and that means I haven’t got enough players.”Jones said he is hopeful that Cardiff’s transfer embargo will be lifted this week, but said he has told his players they will have to work around it if not. “We are hoping to have a player in on Monday, but at the moment we can’t register him,” he said after yesterday’s 1-0 pre-season defeat to Spanish La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna.“We’ve had trialists in, but at this moment, unless the embargo is lifted, we can’t sign anyone. “Everything will all depend on the embargo and if that does not come off, then we will have to go with what we have got. “We’re hoping to get something sorted this week, but I’ve said to the players that we need to be ready if nothing happens.”crisis looming.
