Centerbacks

Anyone else think our centerbacks will cost us promotion this year ?
I truly believe that we have a quality squad but all we are missing is cover for Bothroyd and a good centerhalf.
Gerard and Gyepes was again poor last night and Hudson is definately not the answer. Maybe Darcy can play in there but he was awesome at right back last week, Matthews looked quality again last night but got injured.
I dunno who the answer will be mind with this Loovens loan talk gone quiet

yeah havent had strong cb p/ship since loosing loovens/johnson,although gerrard/blake formed a solid one at end of last season,will be big mistake if dj sticks with hudson,he is deffo no captain has not got those qualities either!!!!!

Im not a fan at all of Hudson. Think hes poor, but after watching Gerrard and Gyepes last night id prefer him to either.
Has Gerrard put on a few pounds in the summer ? Looked big and unfit to me last night and understand Jones decision not to play him against Sheff Utd

I thought the same thing last season, & it cost us then. I don't rate Gyepes, Hudson is accident prone [worse than Purse] & Gerrard, i think, is out of his league.

Totally agree i find it absolutely amazing that DJ hasnt addressed the centre back position. It is clear to everyone that we need a quality centre half who can also lead the other 3 at the back!

just watch the break down of goals we give away the center backs was at fault for most so nothings going to change this year with piss poor 6.2center backs which snails turn faster than

Agree we need a new centre back, don't know if it will cost us promotion though. It depends on how Gerrard reacts after last night really, he wasn't his usual self. Apparently Seyi Olofinjana can slot there if needed, maybe this is Daves thinking or maybe he will pull one out the bag like Martin John who I don't think anyone had expected to play last night.

I wonder if Gerard is still smarting from being dropped from the play off final?

CBs did cost us last season but not solely down to them. The protection they had from CM was virtually non-existent

Ledley/Rae/McPhail all have their strengths (with the possible exception of Rae ) but tackling was not one of them. As a result our CBs constantly had CMs running at them which was always going to cause problems. No coincidence that one of our most balanced performances was when Riccy strated a game in midfield and suddenly the defence looked a lot safer.

Hopefully Olofanjano will solve that problem this season and with Koumas pushing the opposition deeper then maybe, if Gerrard regains his form, the problems might noot be so obvious

What id do to have rog johnson back in defence for us.

pity to think we had James Collins & Danny gabbidon who were good but we lacked in other possitions then we had Johnson & Loovens yet again lacked in other possitions now we have a better squad and poor Cenral defenders.

I thought Gerrard would get better after a few dodgy shows at the beginning of the season last year and I thought he did improve however he had his chance to prove that he should be in the team and blew it last night.

As for you post about the centre backs tho...i thought it was spot on. New signing at left back didnt impress mee too much tho, yes he was good in parts but also was hiding at times....saying that he may be lacking a little fitness and therefor confidence as his cramp would prove in the latter stages.
Koumas looked a different league tho so well done to DJ
