Holiday to Mexico anyone been?

Sat Aug 14, 2010 11:34 am

Can you give any advice please?

Is it better to take Dollars on Peso's or a mixture. I am all inclusive so shouldn't need to take too much but will need money for tips etc. What is a good amount to tip?

Any trips worthwhile?

Been to Cancun a few times. Hotels are generally fantastic, I stayed at Dreams Hotel and Spa Resort which is great. You can swim with Dolphins there too! Worthwhile taking a trip to Chichen Itza which has amazing history and worth being on an organized tour. Party Hopper tour is also a laugh depending who your with to Senor Frogs Coco Bongo etc. :ayatollah:

Many thanks.

Don't they stiff you though giving you less Peso's back as change?

Chichen Itza? Is that a Mayan trip?

No Generally if you use the main restaurants and bars they're fine and you get far more in shops for your dollar so its normally OK. Chichen Itza is a mayan trip and its normally really hot so take a hat and loads of water.....if y7our ginger you may want to wear 1" of factor 75 all over :D

When I went to Cancun (quite a few years back now!) you couldn't get Pesos to take with you because Mexico has a closed currency. US dollars were widely accepted and you could change them to pesos in the hotel anyway.

Thanks. That's exactly what I was after. Looks awesome.

Any more tips? I'm guessing tipping whilst at my resort is not expected but will help get smoother service. How much is a good rate?

I think I will take just dollars.

I would also suggest diving in one of the sink holes, we did it on the same trip as Chichen Itza but sorry cant remember the name of the place.

Tipping is generally a dollar or two and your right it goes along way!
ENJOY!

Serious now - DO NOT GO!!

My brother-in-law just came back and was in Tituana, Cancun and Acapulco.. people
were getting shot dead in all these places. They are now targetting tourists for kidnap.

It genuinely is lawless

Went last March to a resort in Playa del Carmen. Fantastic holiday, everything you could want. Had dollars with us but to be honest on an all-inclusive you dont really need them. I dont think the staff were allowed to take tips, although we left some for the cleaners.

We didn't do any trips as we were with our 2yr old and just stayed by the beach or pools. My mother in law and her sister went on a trip to see some pyramid but spent 7hrs on a bus, so I'd check on tripadvisor.com before booking any excursions.

Any country has it's social problems, but it never crossed our minds while we were there. Security on the front entrance of the hotel and coppers walking along the beach every now and then ensure the only hassle you get is an occasional jet-ski tout.

Best holiday I've ever been on. Sure you'll have a great time!

Cheers
Paul

been a few times. You wont have any problems in Cancun, its not like the rest of mexico (crime etc) its very well run and policed, they cant afford to have anything going wrong as it makes so much money for them from the Yanks and other tourists. Any issues will be cleared up real quick. The mexican people who work there are all so friendly and happy, its seen as a great job to have in a country will huge unemployment problems. The rest of the country is a different ball game entirely. Its worth being careful if you go anywhere outside cancun. I backpacked around the place for 2 months about 12 years ago and ts nothing like cancun at all. Had it all, robbed, mugged, conned...everything (mainly in mexico city mind and trust me to blinking stumble into a group of 80 mexican football fans just after they had lost a game!!)!!! Had a great time though and met some really lovely mexicans. Cancun is like an insight to heaven i tell you. you cant go wrong there. probably the best holiday of my life, it was my honeymoon mind. Nevermind the all inclusive, we had a bar with optics they would refill everyday if needed on our room, and a hot tub.... the moon palace...awesome.
ps
chitchen itza is a good 3 hours away but well worth it, its good to be there at dawn or sunset which is impossible if you stay in cancun, might be worth treating yourself to a night in the hotel next to the site as you can then be there without the tourist hoards etc....Coba is also a good site and is closer to cancun, its a bit rugged mind and wasnt even discovered in the jungle when i first went 12 years before doing my mayan trek. just writing this i am tempted to book another trip there. outstanding!!! :ayatollah:

went backpacking around the country for a few months in 2001 and did the all inclusive thing in playa del carmen a few years back.

absolutely love the place....... its got everything you could want there

all inclusive i take it your going to cancun/playa del carmen.

If your going in sept/oct take a little trip to Holbox Island (hotel should be able to arrange) 3 hours-ish and can then go swimming with Whale Sharks. (fish the size of a bendy bus) don't worry they're veggie ..

also get out of the resort you'll be quite safe around that area, about 40 mins south (bus/taxi) go to akumel (only 1 road follows the coast down) lovely beach with no massive hotels take your snorkel and about 20 metres out you be swimming with the turtles and sting rays. amazing!!!

Don't know if they still do, but in 2001 if you got to chichen before 10 o'clock I think (possibly only on a sunday) they would let you inside the big pyramid, go through the tunnels and end up in a big throne room.

Other things... ahtun chen (underground caves and wildlife reserve), xel-ha, dolphins swims, Isla Mujheres also used to have a beach party once a week (island opposite cancun, not much else there apart from proper paradise type beach) speak to one of the fishermen on the beach if you fancy going big game fishing or diving without a crowd and they'll take you out for a few dollar.

Thats about it around the carribean, enjoy.
You'll love it.
