Should they build a Mosque a couple of blocks away from ground zero!?
Wed Aug 18, 2010 12:01 pm
I don't think I can give a rational answer to this question.

But why did the muslim community ask for a mosque to be built there in the first place, knowing the history of the site?

Yes. It's an extraordinary show of support and compassion from the people of New York. New York is a city that is build upon immigration, a city with probably the worlds widest and diverse ethnic mix.
One thing to note, Muslims didn't fly planes into the world trade centre, but the people who flew the planes into the world trade centre were muslim.

Out of interest, and I genuinely don't know the answer to this, did the citizens of New York say that this could go ahead or was it Obama?
Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:03 pm
It was Obama, most of the people in New York (according to opinion polls) do not want it.
It is causing so much controversy over there that some are using it politically to destabilise the Obama administration. It seems to be working as well, his support figures are at an all time low.

Muslims did not cause the 9/11 attacks so why not. People should not tar all Muslims with the same brush.
Btw, the proposed site of where it will be built is a few blocks away from ground zero.

Same here ive seen quite alot of conspiracy programs and what they have proven no way those towers should have fallen the way they did, dynimaite ect and the planes looked like military air craft instead of commercial. Also bush was looking to invade Iraq/Afgahnistan. Of what i have seen its sad to say but i but i highly consider it was the US government who performed the attack, Although Muslim extreamists have admitted it was them. My answer is still no to the mosque being built.

Another way of lookingat this is the fact that, because we are not New Yorkers, we do not truly know the depth of feeling that still exists ober 9/11. My guess is that it is still pretty strong. It's probably still feels pretty recent as far as people who lost loved ones or who survived the atrocity are concerned so the depth of feeling will still be very strong. I'm not sure why Obama is doing this without first consulting the citizens of New York and those directly affected (my apologies if he has already)
Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:44 pm
If you ignore the conspiracy theories as certain groups have admitted to the attacks.
It would be like Obama agreeing to build a memorial to Japanese military history at Pearl Harbour.
Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:47 pm
I don't see why not as included in the mosque will have a memorial to 9/11 what better way to show the redknecks in america and fundementalists that we can be tolerant, like the vast majority of muslims
