Tottenham hatch 'ingenious idea' to sign Manchester United target Gareth Bale as transfer takes twist

Friday 14th March 2019

Zinedine Zidane is back at Real Madrid - and that could mean bad news for Gareth Bale

Reports in Spain suggest that Tottenham will look to re-sign Gareth Bale this summer.

Zinedine Zidane's return to Real Madrid has thrown further doubt on the Welshman's future in the Spanish capital, with Bale believed not to be among the Frenchman's favourites during his first stint at the Bernabeu.

Spanish national AS ( via SportWitness ) claim that Spurs are keen on the 29-year-old, in the knowledge that Real want Christian Eriksen as part of their squad overhaul.

The Dane has been a long-term target, but any Spurs deal for Bale is complicated by his astronomical wages.

Chairman Daniel Levy has the "ingenious idea" of signing Bale on a season-long loan contract, with Real picking up the majority of his wage packet.

Manchester United are also keen on him, and it was reported last week that he had already bought a house in the area ahead of a move to the north west.

But Bale's agent Jonathan Barnett stated last week that his client was happy in Madrid despite his troubles and the rough treatment from a section of the Real fanbase.

"I think he's been a great player for Real Madrid and I think in years to come they'll be talking Gareth Bale's great goals and achievements for Real Madrid," added Barnett.

"For the fans to behave like they did I think is disgusting.

"I'm not saying that it affects him. I'm talking for myself not for Gareth. I watch what Gareth has achieved and I see how he loves Real Madrid.

"Unfortunately, disgusting press, fake news and all this has affected the fans probably so the press have a lot to be sorry for.

"In general he's been great for the club, and I think for the fans to boo him is absolutely disgraceful. But that's me talking, I haven't discussed it with Gareth.

"He loves Real Madrid, so it must hurt him to be booed.

"We've been together since he was a young boy. He doesn't really care about the newspapers and this sort of rubbish. But when his own fans boo him it does hurt.

"It might well be that the time will come where he's had enough."

'SPURS TRIED FOR BALE'

Tottenham attempted to agree a loan deal with Real Madrid for Gareth Bale last season, according to Diario AS.

However, the report suggests Spurs were unable to meet the player's wage demands, said to be around €12m a year.

The Welshman's former club may yet reignite their interest in the summer.

'BALE TO DECIDE FUTURE IN SUMMER'

Sky Sports

15/03/19

Gareth Bale will make a decision on his Real Madrid future at the end of the season, following Zinedine Zidane’s return as manager, according to the Welshman’s agent Jonathan Barnett.

Asked on BBC Radio 5 Live if he can see Bale in Madrid next season, Barnett said: "Yeah, why not. He wants to play the rest of his career with Real Madrid.

"If that doesn't work out, then we'll talk again. At the moment he's very happy. He'll talk with Mr Zidane and take it from there. We'll see at the end of the season.

"He (Bale) wanted to play one way and Zidane wanted him to play another way. I think that was the cause of it. Over the period of time it just got worse.

"I think if you let Gareth play the way he wants to play and give him a run of games in a row, he can be right up there with anyone. He's still got a great talent."
