Premier League attendances: SHOCK as Chelsea only eighth most-watched team, shock club in third

CHELSEA were only the eighth highest-attended club in the Premier League this season, despite finishing third in the final standings.

Chelsea were way down the attendance rankings this season, despite enjoying a successful Premier League campaign under Maurizio Sarri.

The Italian has come in for plenty of criticism for his style of play since arriving from Napoli but steered the Blues into third behind Manchester City and Liverpool.

As well as securing Champions League qualification, the Blues have also reached the Europe League final where they will face Arsenal in Baku.

Despite their on-field success, Chelsea are down in eighth when every Premier League club’s average attendance is compared.

The Blues have put in plans to build a new stadium in west London but attendances are currently restricted by their traditional home.

Bournemouth prop up the table with an average crowd of just 10,532 at the Vitality Stadium this campaign, just over half of the next lowest club Watford.

Manchester United lead the way with 74,498 watching the Red Devils weekly while West Ham are the surprise package in third with a turnout of 58,336 at the London Stadium.

20. Bournemouth (Vitality Stadium) – 10,532

18. Burnley (Turf Moor) – 20,016

16. Fulham (Craven Cottage) – 24,371

Craven Cottage is one of the smaller stadiums in the Premier League

15. Crystal Palace (Selhurst Park) – 25, 455

14. Southampton (St Mary’s Stadium) – 30,139

13. Brighton & Hove Albion (AMEX Stadium) – 30,426

8. Chelsea (Stamford Bridge) – 40,437

7. Newcastle United (St James’ Park) – 51,121

6. Liverpool (Anfield) – 52,983

The capacity at Anfield has been increased since the Main Stand was extended

5. Manchester City (Etihad Stadium) – 54,130

4. Tottenham Hotspur (Wembley Stadium/Tottenham Hotspur Stadium) – 54,216

3. West Ham United (London Stadium) – 58,336

I would say that every one of these clubs has crowds somewhere near capacity.

pointless article. ranking by percentage of capacity filled would be a better stat

If only we could have finished 11th in the League as our attendances and fans warranted!

It would have been a shock if they were any higher than 8th!

Don’t agree, some clubs like Bournemouth and Watford should be made to expand their stadiums rather than spend all their money on players. Premier League stadiums should be at least 30,000, even the Welsh League insists that clubs must have a 1000 capacity stand if they want promotion to the Welsh Premiership.

the article is about Chelsea only being the 8th best attended club. not about Bournemouth or Watford..
don't see a point in stadium expansions that there is no demand for either..

I think it's clear to most that at the top tier, TV revenues far more important an income than attendance
