RULE CHANGES: THE FUTURE OF FOOTBALL?

New rule change which is set to force goalkeepers to play OUTFIELD next season
By James Whaling

Sin bins are set to be introduced from the fifth step of non-league downwards from the start of next season

A new rule change next season is set to lead to goalkeepers playing outfield - and vice versa.

It was announced earlier this year that sin bins will be introduced from the fifth step of non-league downwards in place of yellow cards for dissent.

And now more details have emerged of how the rule will be carried out if it applies to a goalkeeper.

Regulations say: "In the case of a Goalkeeper being Sin Binned, an outfield player must take over his position for the ten minute period.

"On completing his/her Sin Bin period, the Goalkeeper must re-enter the field of play as an outfield player, until which time there is a stoppage in play enabling him to change position."

In sending a player to the sin bin, the referee will show a yellow card and point to the touchline, instructing them to take 10 minutes out of the game.

For the temporary period, the player's team will be down to 10 men.

The referee will call the player back on to the pitch while play is going on, similarly to if a player has received treatment for an injury.

Yellow cards for dissent will be used in the totting up process and contribute to bans - but the same player being sin binned twice will not result in their side being permanently reduced to 10 men.

While the player in question will not be able to re-enter the field of play, their manager will be permitted to replace him with a substitute upon the expiry of his 10-minute punishment.

On first view this looks like it's 'worth a try' in the lower Leagues but on reflection this could lead to chaos!

David James was one keeper that played outfield in his career!

I think sin bins in the right context could be a great move.

Fair enough, do you trust the referees to not give a fairer advantage to the bigger clubs in these situations? an incorrect decision and 10 minutes without a player is a long time.

Yes it says goalie if sin binned he must return to the out field after his 10 mins is up until break in play so if he is outfield player can just imagine what would happen if goal is scored while he's elsewhere on pitch...ok

I believe that refs favour the big clubs quite frequently, but not trusting referees can apply to any situation in football at any time.

With regards to sin bins, I think it could work well. Stop the dissent and crowding of referees and would be great if it was applied to the diving cheats in the game.

not for me...the yellow that springs to mind was the one Etheridge got for time wasting { more down to the Gladys st screaming and shouting than him taking excessive time }..no keeper for at least 10 minutes because of a ref being influenced ?
