LATEST NEWS: ' HUNGARY V WALES '

Team News

David Brooks could be fit to start for Wales after featuring from the bench against Croatia.

Aaron Ramsey is still unfit with a hamstring injury but Ethan Ampadu could play despite suffering numerous injuries this season and having a lack of game-time.

Wayne Hennessey will win his 84th cap if he starts for Wales.

The changes Wales could make for Hungary Euro 2020 qualifier

Monday 10th June 2019

Wales have little time to dwell on their defeat to Croatia as they look to bounce back by securing victory over Hungary on Tuesday night.

Ryan Giggs' troops were delivered a setback in their bid to qualify for Euro 2020 as they were beaten 2-1 by last year's World Cup finalists in Osijek on Saturday.

And shortly after Wales' defeat at Stadion Gradski, the Hungarians secured a 3-1 victory over Azerbaijan to move three points clear of Wales, although they - along with Croatia - have played a game more than Giggs' side.

The Wales boss named a bumper squad for the away double-header given that some players weren't at full fitness while the quick turnaround along with the blistering heat in Osijek will no doubt take a lot out of his stars.

But Giggs is likely to make alterations to his side for the next game in Budapest.

And there are a number of different ways he could line up at the Groupama Arena.

Wayne Hennessey will remain in goal, while the back four of Connor Roberts, Chris Mepham, James Lawrence and Ben Davies is unlikely to be changed providing that they are all in good condition following their efforts in Croatia, although Ashley Williams, Chris Gunter and Neil Taylor are the key men to step in if required.

Having deployed a more defensive 4-3-3 formation from the outset against Zlatko Dalic's side, Giggs could return to a 4-2-3-1 system in Hungary.

It would mean one of Joe Allen, Matt Smith or Will Vaulks missing out. The former of that trio is a nailed-on starter if fit, meaning Smith or Vaulks could drop out of the side.

And there is of course the small matter of Ethan Ampadu's fitness, with the Chelsea youngster impressing in his 25-minute cameo from the bench against Croatia.

Wales' David Brooks scores against Croatia (Image: PA)
David Brooks appears to be the key cog in the potential changes Giggs could make for the game in the Hungarian capital.

He was unable to start against Croatia due to a lack of fitness, but he was hugely impressive after coming on as a substitute, scoring his first international goal late on in the second half as Wales finished strongly in Osijek.

"It was difficult leaving him on the bench but it was the right thing to do," said Giggs on the Bournemouth star after the game.

But he is in contention to start next time out, and his inclusion could mean Harry Wilson drops out, although it seems more likely that one of the midfield three would lose their place in the starting XI if Brooks were to be squeezed in.

Gareth Bale and Daniel James will once again feature in attack if they are fully fresh following Saturday's loss in Croatia.

So here are two ways Wales could line up against Hungary.

(4-3-3) - Hennessey; Roberts, Mepham, J Lawrence, B Davies; Ampadu, Allen, Smith; Brooks, James, Bale.

(4-2-3-1) - Hennessey; Roberts, Mepham, J Lawrence, B Davies; Ampadu/Smith, Allen; Wilson, Brooks, James, Bale.

If fit Ampadu and Brookes have to start. And maybe we need an older head at the back and bring back Ashley Williams.

A win tomorrow would be huge.

Would put us in a strong position, especially given the matches we've already played.

Much more realistic to get a win tomorrow than the match in Croatia - and we could easily have got something there.

Wales will look to bounce back against Hungary on Tuesday 11th June in their European Championship qualifying match after their second round defeat to World cup runners-up Croatia last Saturday.

Wales currently sit in third place in the group but will go top if they are victorious – albeit possibly temporarily.

They have a game in hand on both Hungary and Croatia who lie above them in the group in first and second places respectively.

When is it?

The match takes place at the Groupama Arena in Budapest on Tuesday, June 11.

Is it on TV?

The match kicks off at 7.45pm.

Sky Sports are showing the game live with coverage starting at 7pm.

S4C are also covering the game with Welsh commentary from 7.25pm.

And you can follow live updates on our website here.

What’s been said?

Ryan Giggs (Image: PA)
Manager Ryan Giggs expressed his dismay at Wales’ loss to Croatia describing it as a “missed chance” after his team wasted a number of opportunities to score.

He emphasised that Wales’ performance is in need of much improvement if they are to triumph over the Hungarians as he stressed that they need to play “a lot better” on Tuesday.

Giggs said: “We’re up against it with regards to playing one less game. It’s also two tough away games on the spin but we have to deal with that, we have to get on with it. But it is important we get something from the game, although there’s 15 more points to be won so we’re aware of that as well, but it would be nice after these two tough games to come away with something.”

Although he was substituted in the first half of their victory over Azerbaijan, Szoboszlai could be fit enough to star in midfield for Hungary while Zsoter Donat was forced to withdraw from the squad due to an ankle injury.

Stats

There is a stark difference between the two sides in terms of world rankings: Wales sit at 19th while Hungary languish far behind in 51st place.

The first meeting between the two nations took place at the 1958 world cup in which John Charles scored for Wales in 1-1 draw.

Craig Bellamy scored a brace in their last match in John Toshack’s first game in his second period as Wales manager in 2005.

Hungary have only once failed to score in their last nine home matches.

Head to head

Wales and Hungary have faced each other ten times since 1958: Wales winning five times, losing three and drawing twice.

The last three meetings were all won by Wales:

9th February 2005 – Wales 2-0 Hungary
16th April 1975 – Hungary 1-2 Wales
30th October 1974 – Wales 2-0 Hungary

Have to agree with those changes. Smith, Wilson and Vaulks underperformed Vs Croatia.

Why is James Lawrence in when he was shocking against Croatia, yet Chris Mepham who played well is dropped?

Gunter booked

A searching ball towards Gareth Bale is overhit on the far side.

Hungary try and get in behind down the left hand side but Lawrence is there to mop it up.

The hosts look after it well though and Gunter fouls just inside his own half and is booked.

Bale does well to nod the free-kick behind.

Hennessey does well to flick a dangerous corner behind for another one but the second corner comes to nothing.

Decent start from the hosts.

Hungary work it into a dangerous area on the far side but Wales manage to scramble it to safety.

Hungary just getting back on the ball here after a good spell from Wales.

But a wasted cross from the far side gives Wales chance to breathe.

Harry Wilson on for David Brooks.

The players look lost

Nobody seems to know what there role is in the team

Giggs choping and changing the team all the time

If we dont qualify from this group it will be a disaster

Giggs is not the man to lead this young team

James Lawrence mistake again. The guy is nowhere near good enough.

Re: FIVE CHANGES: ' HUNGARY V WALES ' MATCH THREAD

Tue Jun 11, 2019 8:35 pm

Lawrence at centre back is awful. He cost us two goals in the last game and one today. We look very weak at the back and severely lacking a centre forward.

On a positive, James looks a very good prospect, frightning pace and acceleration.

Re: FIVE CHANGES: ' HUNGARY V WALES ' MATCH THREAD

Tue Jun 11, 2019 8:36 pm

Giggs is fkn clueless. We look like headless chickens. Once Ampadu went off there's been no one to bring the ball out from the back and pick a pass. It's all been sideways then a sh*t pass giving the ball away. Sorry to say Bale hasn't been at the races either. Plenty of quality in this squad but Giggs couldn't motivate or organise sh*t. RANT OVER :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Re: FIVE CHANGES: ' HUNGARY V WALES ' MATCH THREAD

Tue Jun 11, 2019 8:40 pm

Bale deserves some criticism too. The guy has missed loads of chances. He needs to get out of Real and playing regular football again.

Tue Jun 11, 2019 8:41 pm

Played well mist 2nd half but balls it up again no composure at back leads to another goal and bale may as well not be on pitch hes been that useless last 4/games

Re: FIVE CHANGES: ' HUNGARY V WALES ' MATCH THREAD

Tue Jun 11, 2019 8:42 pm

Well that's the qualifying campaign over. We will need to win pretty much every game now to qualify.

Let's build for the world cup in 3 years aye.

Cheers Giggs you've just thrown away one of the best young squads this country has ever had.

Re: FIVE CHANGES: ' HUNGARY V WALES ' MATCH THREAD

Tue Jun 11, 2019 8:42 pm

Giggs, hmm why did we take 2 away matches after the season finished weeks ago?

Who is this Lawrence at the back, when a PL center back Mepham is nowhere?

This team is going backwards, many many mistakes in the game! What do they do in training.

Giggs is not the man, never was. He couldn’t get a club never served an apprenticeship maybe Beckham will take him as first team coach for his new MLS side :occasion5:

WE ARE OUT

Re: FIVE CHANGES: ' HUNGARY V WALES ' MATCH THREAD

Tue Jun 11, 2019 8:43 pm

Dire! Giggs cannot manage a game. Looking very very difficult to qualify now. Likely to miss out on another tournament. 6pts behind Hungary?! Wtf!!
