The Wales player ratings as Joe Allen dazzles but Gareth Bale cuts a broken figure in Hungary defeat

By Ian Mitchelmore

Wednesday 12th June 2019

The Wales player ratings from the 1-0 defeat to Hungary at the Groupama Arena.

Wayne Hennessey 7

Wasn't tested in the opening half but commanded his box well. A calming figure and made a fine save to deny Laszlo Kleinheisler in the 76th minute. Little he could do about the goal.

Chris Gunter 6

Booked for a foul on Dominik Szoboszlai inside the opening two minutes. Generally solid at right-back though.

Ashley Williams 6

Was deep enough to be untroubled for long periods and help Wales to settle at times when they had been under the cosh, although there were a few heart in mouth moments.

James Lawrence 6

Calm in possession and rarely looked troubled for long periods. But was shrugged off by Adam Szalai in the build-up to Hungary's goal.

Ben Davies 6

Had a real battle on his hands with Hungary captain Balazs Dzsudzsak. Played a key part in Wales' efforts on the left flank in attack.

Ethan Ampadu 7

Made his presence in the middle of the park well known and did so much of the dirty work. Took a few knocks for his troubles but soldiered on. Subbed nine minutes into the second half.

Joe Allen 9 - Star Man

Typically slick operator in the centre of midfield. Presented Tom Lawrence with a glorious chance early on and was off target with a half volley himself. Wonderful headed clearance off his own line. Top performance.

Gareth Bale 5

Started on the right flank, Bale made a few vital interventions in his own box early on but wasn't able to do any damage at the business end of the pitch. Missed a golden chance on the hour mark and couldn't quite pounce quick enough in injury time. Also lucky to be bailed out by Allen after failing to clear a corner.

David Brooks 6

Cut a frustrated figure at times in the opening half as a few promising moments didn't quite come off. Incisive pass in the buildup to Bale's chance on the hour mark. Subbed.

Tom Lawrence 6

Had Wales' two best chances in the opening half but was unable to bulge the net. Must have thought he had an assist for Bale in the 60th minute.

Daniel James 7

Far more threatening once he moved to the left, and his pace caused Hungary heaps of problems. As always seems to be the case, James was the victim of some rough challenges.

Matt Smith (for Ampadu) - Broke up a few attacks. 6

Harry Wilson (for Brooks) - Almost gave Wales the lead after closing down Peter Gulacsi. 6

Sam Vokes (for Tom Lawrence) - Won several aerial duels late on. 6

Id say James Lawrence at a 6 and Gareth Bale at a 5 is being very generous tbh. Id give them both a 4.
