FRANK LAMPARD IN DERBY EXTENSION TALKS

15/06/19

Derby have begun talks with Frank Lampard over a new contract at Pride Park - even though it’s expected Chelsea will soon make an approach to make him their new manager, SSN has learned.

Lampard has two years left on his existing contract and we’ve been told Derby were always planning to sit down with him at the end of the season to discuss an improved longer-term deal.

In his first season as a manager, and despite financial restraints and injury problems off the pitch, Lampard took Derby to the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

With no formal approach from Chelsea yet to discuss taking him to Stamford Bridge, Derby are pushing ahead with their plans to secure Lampard, whom they want to build a structure around.

But - as SSN reported yesterday - there is a clause in Lampard’s existing deal that can see him move to another club for a £4m compensation fee.

It’s thought that would not be an issue for Chelsea, who have made Lampard their priority after agreeing a deal with Juventus to allow Maurizio Sarri to leave.
