Cardiff City fans spat at and attacked two Manchester United supporters sat in the home stand - Wales Online

By Will Hayward

Wednesday 19th June 2019

Two young Manchester United fans who sat among Cardiff supporters ended being punched and spat at after they failed to keep a lid on their celebrations.

Instead of sitting the away section, a 22-year-old from Ely and his 16-year-old brother, bought tickets in the Canton Stand of the Cardiff City Stadium.

The game marked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first as Man Utd boss - and was also the first time he had returned to Cardiff, following his sacking in 2014.

The Bluebirds ended up being thrashed 5-1.

South Wales Police said three men took exception to the two Red Devils' supporters in the home end.

Cardiff Magistrates Court heard heard Gareth Walters, from Ely, spat in the face of one of the victims whereas and Royston Davies from Llanrumney punched him. He was also assaulted. And Lee Thomas, from Pentre, also assaulted the pair.

And as the Man Utd supporters were escorted by stewards from the stand to the concourse violence by the defendants continued.

During the incident, which happened on December 22, several Cardiff City fans attempted to defend the two away supporters.

PC Christian Evans, from South Wales Police, said: "The victim and his brother had obtained tickets for the wrong end and unfortunately, despite their best efforts, were unable to contain their emotions when Manchester United were awarded a penalty.

"While it was perhaps foolish to sit in the home end, this young man did not deserve to be assaulted.

"The overwhelming majority of Cardiff City fans are well-behaved and passionate about their team

"In fact some home fans tried to protect the victim and his brother during this incident.

"However, whenever there is evidence of football-related disorder or violence we always pursue those responsible in order that appropriate action is taken."

The three defendants appeared at Cardiff Magistrates Court on Friday.

Walters, 34, pleaded guilty to spitting in the face of the victim and was sentenced to 8 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and 100 hours of unpaid work. He must pay £100 compensation and £225 victim surcharge and costs.

Davies, 47, pleaded guilty to a common assault by way of a punch, and was sentenced 60 hours unpaid work. He must pay £100 compensation and £170 costs and victim surcharge.

Thomas, 34, pleaded guilty to assaulting the victim and was sentenced to the 120 hours unpaid work and must pay £50 compensation, £170 costs and victim surcharge. He received a longer ban, having already received a three year banning order in March for a pitch invasion in February.

Is it me, I would have thought the bigger crime was punching (assaulting) someone rather than spitting? 8 weeks in prison (albeit suspended) and longer unpaid work for spitting at someone.

Seem very harsh to me, I'm sure Frank Rijkaad didn't get that, and he did it repeatedly to Rudi Voller! So, if I spat at someone in a loss of temper on the streets, I'd get 8 weeks? Surely not!!

What's the punishment for going in the home end? Surely the manu fans had a part in this. If they hadn't antagonised those around them then this wouldn't have happened. What's the point of a home and away end?

I'm quite shocked at the comments by the Police Officer, whilst I understand that he is obviously going to say they shouldn't have been assaulted (they shouldn't obviously) he seems quite blasé about the fact they were in the home end.

You're Looking For Trouble If You Go In The Cardiff Fans Stands. Especially If You Don't Support Cardiff.
It's As Simple As That

If A Swansea Fan Went To Join The Cardiff Supporters That Swansea Fan Will Probably Get Badly Beaten Up.

Angry scenes as Cardiff City fans chased a Manchester United supporter

By Tom Coleman

18/06/19

New footage has emerged of a Manchester United fan being thrown out of the Cardiff City Stadium in front of angry Bluebirds fans.

The shocking video, which appears to be shot on the concourse of the Canton End, seems to be a continuation of the one that emerged on social media earlier this weekend.

The supporter, wearing a red coat, is escorted to a fire door by what looks to be a member of security as Cardiff fans continue the abuse heard in the previous video.

Shortly before he is kicked out of the stadium, the man leading him out has to physically stand in between the United fan and a group of Cardiff supporters to prevent a physical confrontation as things threaten to turn ugly.

At one point, a fan appears to throw beer at him as he leaves through the door.

The game itself saw United beat Cardiff 5-1 with former Bluebirds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer winning his first game in charge of the Red Devils in front of a sold-out contest with a 33,028 crowd.

A Cardiff City spokesperson said on the incident: "We removed the supporter for his own safety and it was obviously a very difficult situation to deal with.

"The size of Manchester United's fanbase and the game mean supporters can acquire tickets from all different sources, but our stewards dealt with it in a swift and efficient manner."

You can watch the initial video of the incident here...

A total of seven away fans were believed to be ejected after being discovered in home supporters' areas, with the club adding that they will review any breaches of the law with South Wales Police.

I always though going in the home end ran the risk of being attacked, thrown out and arrested for inciting ..

PC Christian Evans, from South Wales Police.

i'm at every game and he only has Cardiff fans arrested, never the other fans, always goes straight for the City youngsters, obsessed with nicking Cardiff fans home and away.

'despite their best efforts were unable to contain their emotions'. Seriously?

5 Liverpool fans who went into the East Stand at Old Trafford were jailed a few years ago after it kicked off.

I understand him saying they shouldn't be assaulted, he has too but why he is defending them in his words I have no idea, perhaps he knows the boys?

His comments are shocking mate.

The whole sequence of events would not have happened had the two UTD fans not KNOWINGLY bought tickets in the wrong stand but then celebrated in the faces of the home fans yet there is no condemnation of thst at all.

Why didn't these Man U plastic morons get arrested for incitement? WTF did they expect off city fans, tea and biscuits?

I agree with most of what's been said but spitting on someone is just detestable.

why did city fans attack them when they were already being led out of stand.? Give them hard time shouting ect but to physically assault them was daft considering the reputation of city stewards and police towards home fans.

so where does this begin and end....is 2 ok but if its 8 they are deemed to be inciting trouble, or is it 16 ?
pretty sure if a minibus full rocked up at an away ground last year with home tickets and then it kicked off, we would be looking at 16 banning orders..

Spitting on somebody is degrading, lowest form of behaviour, sorry to say but it is.... and regardless of teams I think everybody missed that a 16yo (still a child in the eyes of the law) was assaulted, the 22yo should have known better too....

I also agree that the officers words are out of order, he’s basically gone on record to say it’s fine for away supporters to sit in the home end and not worry about being hit if they celebrate.... really what a stupid comment to make

Totally agree Paul and fans should remember the officers quotes.

Anyone defending the Cardiff fans here need their heads examined.

If people are that offended by someone who likes the other team sat in their vicinity, then tell a steward and they will escort anyone out of the stadium should they be deemed to be breaking any ground rules.

Spitting on and punching people (including children) as they are being escorted out is utterly reprehensible.

A typical Neanderthal response. .. He’s right you’ve got to be pretty dumb and cowardly to attack fans Simply because they’ve got in your end ...Sweetheart is spot on

A typically foreseeable response to two clowns trying to be clever...

OB should have said..."these two idiots wont be making the same mistake again, Your Honour', and made them apologise for wasting the Courts time.

I don't condone what happened but the lads deliberately went into the area where the hard core fans stand and knew what they were doing. We stand right at the back and just before kick off they came up the aisle at the other side and sidled their way across the back of our seats into that block deliberately avoiding the stewards. I remember saying to my son that there was something not quite right about them. Why they did I don't know because they weren't big lads. Just stupid I suppose.

How lovely.

I will keep the standard of the rest of the sensible world in condemning violence against children just because they like another team then... and you can keep swearing at us because we won't allow you to defend the cowardly actions.

Something so petty should not even go to court. They knew the score going into the home end and the risk if they celebrated. There was a time if you crossed the line you'd except the conequences, dust yourself down and get on with life. A generation wrapped in cotton wool forever playing the victim.
