He's looking phenomenal and raring to go as Bluebirds plan promotion charge

Cardiff City boss could have an unexpected boost for the new season in the shape of a lean, mean and trim Lee Tomlin.

The 30-year-old maverick is still a Bluebirds player - albeit a largely forgotten one - and is due to return with the rest of the squad for pre-season training in a few days' time.

Tomlin appears determined to finally make his mark with Cardiff, posting a photograph of himself on Instagram looking in good nick.

"Another week to get fitter," wrote Tomlin, while on a golfing holiday in Marbella.

Despite a trumpeted £3m move from Bristol City two years ago, Tomlin has failed to make a mark with Cardiff and has been accused by some fans of not looking fit.

But after spells on loan with Nottingham Forest and Peterborough, he clearly wants to start the 2019-20 campaign with a bang, wherever that may be.

Although Tomlin had been written out of the Championship plans for most Cardiff fans, his Instagram post will whet the appetite that his playmaking skills could yet feature for the Bluebirds in the Championship.

To get into the Cardiff starting XI in the ten role, Tomlin would need to usurp Bobby Reid, which appears an unlikely prospect.

But his return to the fold will give manager Neil Warnock fresh food for thought as he ponders his options for the season ahead.

Warnock was keen to land Tomlin from Bristol City, believing he could bring extra quality to the team and has thus been disappointed how it has worked out.

However, he will monitor Tomlin's fitness closely as he prepares for the new campaign.

Tomlin has scored just one goal in 16 Cardiff appearances, away to Reading, while he bagged four in 14 Forest games and two whilst on loan at Peterborough in the second half of the season just gone.

If he can suddenly start firing properly for Cardiff, it will hand Warnock and the Bluebirds a most welcome and unexpected bonus as they plan a promotion push in 2019-20.

Probably slimmed down as he did before joining us, only interested in his next pay day.

Sliming down won’t solve His problems shame but can’t see him in a City shirt again

No great fan of his but if he has slimmed down and is prepared to put in a shift for Cardiff he should be given a second chance. Just maybe he has matured a bit and has learnt from last season that if he doesn't knuckle down he is going to end up playing for someone like Peterborough in league one. Should be given a chance anyway if he is no good loan him out again.

Surely if he's still under contract with us, it's worth giving him a chance. If he's turned himself around, it would be like getting a new player for nothing.

Not for me (Tomlin to play a part this season)

He's taken money under the false pretence of being a 'professional' footballer and whilst the club must take some responsibility for his signing/contract, the only ones smiling right now are Tomlin himself and the Worzels who warned us about him before he came here!

Yes for me we have no one with his skill and was very successful with Forest

Agree, unless he is proving a disruptive influence.

Of course not, doesn't fit our style of play even if he managed to get fit which is unlikely to last.

If he's up for it. Yes 100%. Would be a key player. Warnock will know the answer 1st training session

You'll know the answer before then and believe me it will be down to the gaffer and only the gaffer. If like some are saying he's a bad influence then him and the first team squad will never be at the same venue at the same time.

If we could sell we should but the simple fact is nobody will buy him on the money he’s on.

So if he stays fit then it would make sense and give him a couple of subs appearances to see if he can actually perform. But for me he’s at the last chance saloon.

Will Warnock have time to be watching the first team and Tomlin in the U23's? doubt it.

Key player? never in a million years is he a better option than Reid and Warnock would never play two light weight players like that in the team in key areas.

Agree. Why spend time trying to find that player with the ability to win a game when ones already here? The past is the past. The championship is Tomlins level so I really hope he gets a chance.
Sadly though I can’t see our manager agreeing.

Baring in mind he has to play to stay close to fitness what position do you play him? also considering how we play?
CM? Cant see it, doesn't have the legs or the defensive ability to play as two of the holding players
No 10? Ahead of Reid? No chance
No 10 with Reid upfront, no chance would Warnock play to shorties.

I literally fail to see any place for him other than playing ahead of Reid which would be very odd.

It’s states in the original post that ‘nobody wants him’,so it’s a no brainier for me we give him a chance. We are paying his wages whatever happens so let’s try again to get something out of this poor transfer.

So he's looking slim? There's a difference between looking slim and having fitness & stamina. I'd have been more impressed if we'd been shown pics of him running up Merthyr Mawr sand dunes, rather than him strolling around a golf course.

Agreed and remember a bad influence.

Not one chance, but many chances.

Pretty sure he'll be training with the first team. To see where he is at the moment.

But time will tell

Warnock bought him for a lot of money so it’s up to him and his staff to get him firing ?

Compared to recent spends it wasn't a lot of money and all managers make mistakes.

Bobby reid could be great next year so its a tough one.

Tomlin though is far more creative type player than reid and does have goals and magic in his locker.

A fit and firing tomlin is the closest thing we will ever get to victor camarassa in the championship.

It’s not a question IMO of who he replaces but to have him as a squad player who genuinely could win or turn a game. I’m not suggesting he’d be an automatic pick but as above a squad player. The one game he did turn I recall was at reading when he came off the bench and plus he’d be as likely as anyone to score from a direct free kick which is a distant memory for City fans.

Turn him into a free kick specialist.
