Teenage midfielder Aaron Bolger has made the permanent switch to Cardiff City from Shamrock Rovers.

The youngster made the move to the Welsh capital on a loan back in February, and a lot of praise followed him over the Irish Sea.

Hailed as "technically excellent", Bolger joined the Irish club back in 2016, making 16 academy appearances before making his senior debut aged 16.

Aaron made 36 competitive appearances overall and continued to captain and represent his country at underage level while captaining the Shamrock Rovers academy side.

Ireland underage star is expected to continue playing for the Bluebirds' U-23 side, Irish Mirror report , while the teen is expected to be part of Tom Mohan's Ireland squad for the Under-19 European Championships this month.

Confirming the move on Tuesday, Shamrock Rovers said: "After a number of months on loan, Aaron Bolger has become a Cardiff City player.

"The transfer of the midfielder comes after Aaron impressed in his loan spell with the Cardiff City U23s earlier this year.

"All at Shamrock Rovers F.C. wish Aaron well with the move."

Highly thought of since breaking into the Rovers' senior team, Bolger had been allowed a move after the transfer deadline as Football League rules allowed the transfer of players who are not registered to play in the Premier League after the deadline.

Last season, Cardiff submitted their official 25-man squad to play in the Premier League on February 1. Bolger therefore was signed just for the Under-23 and Under-18s or 19s sides.

So a loan was allowed in a case where the player is an 'Out of Registration Player', which means if the player was last registered as a scholar or academy Player — which Bolger was at Shamrock Rovers.

They say he couldn't play for us because he wasn't in the 25 but he wouldn't need to be with his age? or is it because he was onloan?

To qualify on the under age rule in the Premier League you have to have come through the ranks of a UK club. Aren't Shamrock Rovers a side from the Republic of Ireland?
