UPDATED: Lewis Holtby already signed?

Fri Jul 05, 2019 8:21 am

By the looks of transfermarkt Lewis Holtby is no longer at his current club and a few days ago has signed with “unknown”. Does this mean he has signed for a club (maybe Cardiff) but have demanded it not be confirmed as to wait for some reason to announce it at a particular time? I find it odd that as of this month he has signed to “unknown” on a free transfer. Whereas players without a club on the site are down as “no club”. So surely this means Holtby has already signed with someone officially? But it’s just not made public. Hopefully it’s City?

Attached is a comparison between Joe Ledley who is without a club, and Holtby who in theory should either be down as his club last season, or also a free agent, but instead has been listed as an actual transfer has gone down.

Don't think it means much. Transfermrkt aren't "ITK" or anything official. They just collect data and do analysis.

Maybe they know as of 01/07 he will be a free transfer so just put the details in already?

Maybe unknown as he hasn't gone anywhere yet.

Although I would be happy if it was with us!!

I think he was out of contract in Germany so it's probably because his contract would have ended on June 30.

Where Cardiff City's interest in former Tottenham star Lewis Holtby now stands
By Tom Coleman

The Bluebirds have been strongly linked with a move for the German midfielder this summer

The 28-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs all over the world since being released from Hamburg at the end of last season, with Cardiff believed to be one of those interested in his signature.

Reports in Germany suggested Holtby had even opened talks with the Bluebirds, along with Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, PAOK Thessaloniki and Chicago Fire, regarding a potential move.

Despite the intense level of competition, it's understood Holtby was prepared to join a Championship side, provided they were capable of launching a realistic promotion challenge.

Cardiff would have fitted that bill perfectly, with boss Neil Warnock keen on building a side capable of earning the ninth promotion of his career.

However, sources close to the player have categorically ruled out a move to South Wales, adding that it is '100 per cent' not a possibility.

Warnock is nevertheless likely to be in the market for an attacking midfielder in this transfer window, after Victor Camarasa's return to Real Betis at the end of his loan spell, and Holtby would have likely been a name that would have excited a number of City fans.

But it now seems he will now have to look elsewhere, although any new recruits are unlikely to come through the door before the club jet off for their preseason tour of North America, with Will Vaulks, Joe Day, Curtis Nelson and Aaron Bolger already on board.

WalesOnline understands Holtby has received offers from the Premier League, but is still weighing up his options amid reports in Turkey that he could be set for a move to Besiktas.

Turkish outlet Fanatik claims Besiktas boss Abdullah Avci is set to meet with the midfielder to discuss a potential move, having reportedly been thwarted in his attempts to land Shinji Kagawa and Kevin-Prince Boateng.
