Cardiff City chief Mehmet Dalman reveals stark financial reality of relegation as Leeds United demand fairer Championship TV deal

Despite Cardiff City earning nearly £200million from being in the Premier League, Cardiff City Chairman says there is an argument that we did not earn enough.

Dalman would still like to take over fellow Championship club Charlton.

Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman has dismissed suggestions that parachute payments could hand the Bluebirds a financial advantage over their Championship rivals following relegation from the Premier League.

Dalman was speaking at the inaugural FT Business of Football Summit in London earlier in the summer, an event aimed at focusing on the opportunities and challenges currency being faced across the industry.

Samantha Gordon, chief financial officer of Nottingham Forest was also in attendance, along with Leeds United chairman Andrea Radrizzani, who claimed that the current financial landscape meant the Elland Road outfit could not compete with clubs coming down from the Premier League.

MEHMET DALMAN:

He said: "I cannot compete with clubs coming from the Premier League with a £100m budget who can come to our place and steal our players easily."

However, Dalman, who's believed to still be keen on taking over newly-promoted Championship side Charlton Athletic , has dismissed any suggestion that Cardiff will be able to financially outmuscle their rivals this summer.

He responded: "It's a myth that we're coming back down with £200m in our pocket to go out and buy players.

"In fact, you could argue the parachute payments are not enough to sustain our own abilities [in the Championship].

"Most clubs who get promoted have tended to mortgage the parachute payments long before they get relegated."

Dalman insists that even promotion to the Premier League does little to bridge the financial gap between the Premier League and the Championship, particularly given the costs associated with pushing towards top flight football.

"When you get to the Premier League you need to sustain yourself in the league for at least three years," he added.

"If you're in the Championship you're spending every penny trying to get into the Premier League and you run losses all the time.

"And when you do get promoted you really do need to invest that money to have a fighting chance of staying in the Premier League."

Leeds chief Radrizzani added that more needed to be done help lessen the gap between the two divisions, particularly when it comes to TV revenue.

Radrizzani compared United's income from EFL TV rights to that of Huddersfield Town, who earned £77.5m in TV rights income in the Premier League, with Leeds earning just three per cent of that figure.

That comes despite Leeds appearing 23 times on Sky Sports last season, more than double than that of the Terriers.

The Leeds chief has subsequently called on changes to the way EFL TV rights are sold.

A record £595m five-year deal starting from next season was agreed with Sky back in November, a rise in value of 35 per cent on the previous package, but it wasn't popular with many Championship clubs given the gap left by the gargantuan £4.55bn deal struck by the Premier League for the next three years.

"I think we need to sit down and have a different strategy to help the clubs create more revenue," Radrizzani added.

"[The deal] probably could have been done better if the rights could be packaged differently, maybe creating more time slots on different days and stimulating the competition with new digital players coming up and being active in other territories."

I don't think we've mortgaged our parachute payments like we did last time that's why we can have a go this time.Poor old Leeds eh,not sure what these smaller clubs expect.

Annis a lot of those quotes associated with Dalman are actually quotes by the Notts Forrest and this one below is from the Leeds chairman

MEHMET DALMAN:

He said: "I cannot compete with clubs coming from the Premier League with a £100m budget who can come to our place and steal our players easily."

The main thing is whoever negotiated TV deal for efl need shooting as they sold clubs down the river regarding premier leagues new contract and the percentage efl receives based on the length of contract... basically a £125m a year split between 72 clubs :o

I don't think we will have a bucket load of cash to spend. We may have had earned a nice chunk from the PL, but we started off with a nice minus figure as well. I think we will have to work mainly with what we already have, and offload players in order to buy some. We are probably still having to hold back £15m to pay Nantes if that should go against us.

What a lot of nonsense. You get loads of money from being in the premier league but it gives you no advantage if you are relegated, tell that to a Rotherham fan. As for the premier league big boys coming in and pinching our star players who if he thinking of? Have we actually produced a premier league star player since Aaron Ramsey.
