Here's where things stand for the Cardiff City striker

Cardiff City's preparations for the new season continued with a 1-1 draw with Forest Green Rovers in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Tuesday afternoon.

A number of City's big names were handed a run out, including Neil Etheridge, Bobby Reid and Sean Morrison, but it was one of Cardiff's forgotten stars who popped up to restore parity midway through the second half.

But while Gary Madine's towering header was enough to cancel out Shawn McCoulsky's earlier penalty, he still has work to do if he is to convince Neil Warnock he has a part to play in his plans for the upcoming season.

Hopes were high for the 28-year old when he completed a £6m move to south Wales back in January 2018, but Madine is yet to muster a single competitive goal for the Bluebirds.

Last season saw him spend a highly successful loan spell at Sheffield United, where he netted three goals in 16 appearances as the Blades marched on to promotion to the Premier League.

Madine unsurprisingly said he wanted to stay at Bramall Lane , but there's been very little evidence to suggest that the feeling is mutual, with Blades boss Chris Wilder seemingly turning his attention elsewhere.

Nevertheless, it's at times felt inevitable that Madine will be moved on from Cardiff City Stadium this summer, although at this stage there is no sign of any imminent exit.

As it stands, Warnock is yet to make a decision on the striker's future and hasn't yet closed the door on the possibility of including him in his first team plans, although he is still keen to bring in more firepower to help boost his side's chances of a promotion .

Sources close to the player have been keen to stress that the pair have enjoyed a strong working relationship, and that they have even held talks over what could come next.

Madine is aware that should Warnock get the new striker he so craves, it will only add add fuel to talk of a move away, but he is believed to be focused on fighting for a place in the Yorkshireman's plans until he is told otherwise, and is believed to have shown a good attitude in training since returning this summer.

The player himself is open to staying in south Wales, but only on the condition that he is given the chance to shine for the Bluebirds.

Warnock himself has several other considerations to make, with the futures of Omar Bogle and Danny Ward also currently up in the air.

However, the apparent return of Lee Tomlin to the fold shows that Warnock is always willing to offer players a way back into his thinking, but the window to impress is rapidly shortening.

The squad Warnock chooses to take to North America on Thursday may not necessarily be a definitive indicator of what's to come, but it will certainly offer a small insight into the manager's current mindset.

That penalty miss against Wolves along with the £6m transfer fee seemed to smash his confidence. If only NW could get him back to the level he had at Bolton we would have the solution to our striker problems.

Be interesting how Warnock handles him pre season. If he can get in amongst the goals, he may still have a chance here. If he wants to keep him no doubt he will be talking him up big time.

More likely he played sh*t but the club put it out that he scored so other clubs will take him off our hands. I mean where's the evidence?

You’re right, he’s on most fans minds as they’re concerned he’ll be staying!
For me, I don’t think he’s good enough and would like him gone for a fee but saying that I’d be relatively happy if he was back up to a new striker.
