When is the Carabao Cup 2nd round draw and the rules Cardiff City, Swansea City and Newport County need to know

Tuesday 13th August 2019

Swansea City and Newport County take on Northampton Town and Gillingham respectively in the first round of the Carabao Cup this week while Cardiff City do not come into the competition until the second round by virtue of finishing above 20th spot in the Premier League last term.

Here's everything you need to know about the latest rules of the competition as well as the draw details for round two.

When is the second round draw?

The draw for round two of this year's competition will take place on Tuesday, August 13.

It will commence shortly after Salford City's clash with Leeds United which gets under way at 7:45pm.

If that encounter finishes in regular time, the draw should begin at around 10pm. If it goes to penalties, the draw could be closer to 10:15pm.

How can I watch it?

The draw will be televised live on Sky Sports' Football and Main Event channels.

Which teams come into the second round draw?

A total of 15 teams will enter the tournament at the second hurdle.

Cardiff and Fulham - who finished 18th and 19th respectively in the top flight last season - will be joined by the 13 Premier League sides who are not competing in European competitions during the 2019/20 campaign.

Those 15 clubs will of course be joined in the draw by the teams to emerge victorious from each of the first round contests.

The second round draw with be regionalised into north and south sections.

The teams who finished in the top seven of the Premier League last season will all enter the competition at the third round phase.

When will the second round fixtures take place?

Round two games will take place in the week commencing Monday, August 26.

What are the key rules to know about this season's competition?

Extra-time is no longer a concern for teams in the earlier rounds of the Carabao Cup.

Matches that are level after 90 minutes in each round prior to the final will all go straight to penalties.

There are no replays in the competition, with only the semi-final contests being played over two legs. If last four ties are level on aggregate after the two matches, they will also go straight to a penalty shootout.

Only the final will feature extra-time if the sides can't be separated after 90 minutes.

Penalty shootouts will follow the traditional ABAB format, meaning teams will alternate when it comes to taking spot-kicks rather than using the ABBA system that was previously trialled by the EFL.
