The alarming statistics that explain why Cardiff City have misfired so far this season
By Glen Williams

The Bluebirds have been incredibly wasteful in front of goal

It is no secret that Cardiff City have found goals difficult to come by at the start of this Championship campaign.

Six games have already passed us by and the Bluebirds are floundering in 13th place in the table – it's safe to say they are yet to really hit their straps.

Some might lay the blame at the door of the defenders, having already conceded nine goals so far this term, but it is at the other end of the pitch that Cardiff really have cause for concern.

Neil Warnock's side are desperately searching for their cutting edge up front and are finding goals exceedingly difficult to come by.

The Bluebirds sit third in the rankings for total shots taken (93), behind West Brom (99) and Leeds United (106), this season, but have registered only seven goals.

Only Leeds and Fulham (both 31), both of whom have scored more goals and sit higher in the table, have had more shots on target than City (29), which goes a long way to explaining just how shorn of confidence the Bluebirds forwards are.

Cardiff's five recognised strikers, Robert Glatzel, Isaac Vassell, Omar Bogle, Gary Madine and Danny Ward, have registered two goals between them in these six games.

Glatzel, the Bluebirds' £5.5million summer signing from German tier two side Heidenheim, is yet to open his account for his new club, nor has Madine, who joined for £6million from Bolton last year.

That means the City have an alarming goal conversion rate of just 11 per cent, once you discount the blocked shots, which goes a long way to explaining their relatively disappointing start to the season.

You can look at all stats like this all you want, one thing those numbers won’t tell you is the quality of those chances. We’ve been incredibly poor at creating clear cut chances.

Why do they assume its the strikers misfiring? Those shots could have come from anyone on the pitch. Infact at a guess I would think our wide players would have had more shots than the strikers who generally chasing or have their back to goal.
