Emiliano Sala's family want the investigation into the crash in which he died to continue

A crowd-funded salvage operation could be launched for the plane on which Emiliano Sala was killed after his family took the extraordinary step of publicly criticising the air accident investigation into his death.

Breaking their silence on the refusal of the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) to recover the private jet that crashed into the English Channel on January 21, Sala’s mother, Mercedes Taffarel, sister Romina and brother Dario accused the Government body of having let them down in their search for the truth.

They and the family of pilot Dave Ibbotson, who is missing presumed dead, last month called for the AAIB to salvage the Piper Malibu aircraft after toxicology reports revealed that Sala had been poisoned by potentially-fatal levels of carbon monoxide and that Ibbotson was likely to have been, too.

Both families were “reeling” after being informed of the AAIB’s refusal, according to the man who found the wreckage of the plane, renowned shipwreck hunter David Mearns.

He and Sala’s family also accused AAIB investigators of announcing back in January that they were going to recommend not even searching for the aircraft, which they said may never have been found but for the launch of a crowd-funded private hunt.

Both pointed out that had Sala’s body not been located and recovered, one of the possible causes of the crash would never have been revealed.

A statement released to Telegraph Sport on behalf of the Argentinian’s family said they were “disappointed by the AAIB’s response to Emiliano’s death”.

It added: “They were especially surprised when, in the immediate aftermath of the incident, it appeared that the AAIB had given up on conducting a full search for the aeroplane, so it fell on them to do that.

“Without David Mearns locating the plane, Emiliano’s body might never have been recovered and the potential significance of carbon-monoxide poisoning of him and the pilot would never have been known.

“The family still hope that the inquest process will provide them with the answers they seek in relation to Emiliano’s death and that air safety will be improved, including the prevention of similar deaths in future. They hope that their faith in English justice is not betrayed.

“The family are keeping all options on the table as to their next move. They will do everything possible to ensure that the truth about this terrible accident is revealed, so no family has to go through the same torment.”

Representatives for the family declined to comment on what options were under consideration and whether a crowd-funded salvage operation was among them.

But Cardiff City, who have also called for the plane to be recovered, told Telegraph Sport they would be willing to “look at options” for such a move.

Chairman Mehmet Dalman said: “Cardiff City Football Club believes that salvaging the aircraft is the only logical route to being able to establish exactly what caused the crash. There is significant public interest in doing so, to prevent further tragedies of this nature.

“Contrary to comments elsewhere that this isn’t necessary, we feel only with a detailed analysis of the wreckage can we have complete confidence in the conclusions drawn.

“We would be willing to work with other parties to look at options for the salvage operation, if this would be appropriate.”

Back in February, Cardiff multi-millionaire owner, Vincent Tan, donated £50,000 towards a private search for Ibbotson.

Mearns, who has remained in close contact with both Sala’s and Ibbotson’s families since locating the plane, said he had yet to be approached by anyone asking him to recover the wreckage.

Claiming the AAIB’s refusal to do so made “no sense”, he also warned there may be only a month left to conduct such an operation in calm conditions.

In the AAIB’s first special bulletin on the accident back in February, the prospect of the wreckage being salvaged was specifically mentioned, with the report stating the weather and sea conditions at the time had made it impossible to recover it safely.

Responding last month to calls to return to the site, it said doing so would “not add significantly to the investigation”, which would “identify the correct safety issues through other means”.

It said its decision had taken into account the “high cost” of a recovery and the risk that the wreckage “would not yield definitive evidence” following “a violent impact with the sea”.

Mearns claimed investigators gave “similar” reasons in January to justify not searching for the plane and said any recovery costs could be minimised because “people want to help”.

He also questioned whether the AAIB would similarly play down the evidential value of wreckage from a crash on land.

The AAIB did not dispute the accusation by Sala’s family and Mearns that investigators told them in January they were going to recommend not to hunt for the plane.

It said it had little confidence at that stage the aircraft would be found but that this quickly changed after it managed to narrow down the search area, which saw it join forces with Mearns’ crowd-funded hunt.

It stressed it ultimately would have carried out its own search irrespective of the private operation.

But Mearns accused the AAIB of failing to communicate that at the time, adding: “Why didn’t they say to the families, ‘Save your money. Stand down. We’ll do it’? We never heard that.”
