Charlton Athletic have completed the signing of Wales international Adam Matthews on a one-year deal.

The former Cardiff City star had previously been without a club after being released by Sunderland, who were beaten by the Addicks in the League One play-off final at the end of last season.

The 27-year-old has been training with Lee Bowyer's side over the last couple of weeks, and has impressed those inside The Valley, earning himself a brand new short-term deal.

Matthews, who began his career in the Welsh capital before joining Scottish giants Celtic, admitted that he's glad to have resolved his future following a largely uncertain summer.

"I’m excited," said Matthews.

"It’s been a tough summer for me personally, not knowing what was going to happen, so I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to come and train to the boys. I want to kick on now and, firstly, stay in the division, but the lads have started really well, so hopefully we can keep that going."

Matthews is the latest member of Charlton's growing Welsh contingent, with Jonny Williams also recently swapping Wearside for South London.

"I know Jonny [Williams] and Tom [Lockyer] well from Wales and I played with Beram [Kayal] at Celtic, so it’s been quite an easy transition for me and I’ve been training with the lads for a few weeks now, so I feel I can slot right in."

The full-back made his Wales debut in 2011, and has since gone on to win 14 caps for his country, but his stuttering club career has seen him fall out of the international picture.

That could all change should Matthews impress at his new employers, who are clearly confidence that he will prove a successful acquisition.

Head of Recruitment, Steve Gallen, said: "He’s a good right-back who is very attacking and loves getting forward which is something that Lee [Bowyer] was keen on in particular.

"He’s completely proved his fitness and that he’s got a good attitude so he fully deserves the offer of a contract and balances out the squad. We wanted two players for every position and now we’ve finally got that."

Why didn't we go for him? He was treated disgracefully by Dave Jones and we could certainly do with defensive cover

Didn't help himself with some of the comments he made like Ledley so perhaps he didn't want to come here.
