Junior Hoilett helped fire Canada to a convincing win over Cuba on Saturday
Cardiff City winger Junior Hoilett has returned early from international duty after netting a hat-trick for Canada at the weekend, ahead of the Bluebirds' Championship meeting with Derby County.
Hoilett - who has started only one of his five League appearances for Cardiff so far in 2019-20 - wore the captain's armband for Canada's Concacaf Nations League group fixture against Cuba on Saturday evening, which they won 6-0.
He grabbed three of those goals, rounding off the treble with a cooly-taken penalty late on.
“It’s a dream come true to captain my country and top it with a hat-trick,” he said.
“We worked hard for it all week and we came out as a team, and there is more to come
The return fixture is in George Town, Cayman Islands on Tuesday - but Hoilett looks set not to feature.
According to the Canadian national team's Twitter account, the 29-year-old "has returned to England" for family reasons.
Hoilett started both of Cardiff's games against Derby in the 2017-18 Championship season. The Cardiff City Stadium meeting finished goalless, before the Rams won 3-1 at Pride Park, courtesy of goals from a Cameron Jerome double and Matej Vydra's strike.
