Team news

“We’ve had an indifferent break It’s been good for the longer term injuries, Bamba, Etheridge, Pack have all done well. Connoly has had another op.

“We’ve had a few little knocks which haven’t helped us. We are a long way from knowing what our team is for tomorrow.

“Leo (Leandro) is not even flying back until this afternoon, it’s scandalous how countries can get away with that. Friday night after an international break doesn’t help us.

“You need a manager like Ryan Giggs who doesn’t play Lawrence on the monday when they are playing us on Friday.

“Leandro Bacuna could fly to the East Midlands to meet us at the hotel. Will Vaulks has come back so that’s a plus for us.

“We’ve had one or two other little knocks as well.

“It’s a bit up in the air.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

“Jazz Richards has picked up another knock. He is so unlucky – just a challenge with Aden Flint. He has a swollen ankle. It’s been a bit like Casualty.”

Junior Hoilett is 50/50

NEIL WARNOCK:

“He’s got a personal problem. One of the family is seriously ill and we will just have to keep in touch. What I’ve said to Junior that family is more important than Derby County. So he will let me know if he is available or not.

“The next 24 hours are going to be hard on him. There’s no pressure on him. We’d love him to play but we’re not going to push him to that.”

INJURY UPDATE:

Neil Etheridge is back in full training on grass and is said to be progressing well following the grade three hamstring tear he sustained against Wigan on the opening day of the season / but will miss the Derby game.

Marlon Pack is two weeks behind the Bluebirds No 1 and is yet to train on grass, instead working on his rehabilitation in the gym / will miss the Derby game.

Sol Bamba, last Thursday took part in his first five-a-side game during training. City's players were given strict instructions not to make contact with the defender, who wore a bright orange bib during the session / but will miss the Derby game.

An injury like Bamba's usually means eight to nine months on the sidelines, so it is understandable that, just six months after the player's surgery, City are tempering his expectations.

Danny Ward is training and running on grass this week as he steps up his rehabilitation from an Achilles injury.

The striker is yet to make an appearance this term following an injury he sustained ahead of the campaign and it could be a little while yet before we see him back in a City shirt / but will miss the Derby game.

Jazz Richards is back in training.

Yes, the match is live on Sky Sports.

About Derby County

Derby County Football Club is a professional association football club based in Derby, Derbyshire, England. The club competes in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football, and has played its home matches at Pride Park Stadium since 1997.

Notable for being one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888, Derby County is one of only 10 clubs to have competed in every season of the English football league system and, in 2009, was ranked 137th in the top 200 European football teams of the 20th century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics.

The club was founded in 1884 by William Morley, as an offshoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club; it has spent all but four seasons in the top two divisions of English football. Its competitive peak came in the 1970s when it twice won the First Division and competed in major European competitions on four separate occasions, reaching the European Cup semi-finals as well as winning several minor trophies. Additionally, the club was a strong force in the interwar years, winning the 1945–46 FA Cup.

The club's home colours have been black and white since the 1890s. The team gets its nickname, The Rams, to show tribute to its links with the First Regiment of Derby Militia, which took a ram as its mascot. Additionally adopting the song "The Derby Ram" as its regimental song.

Previous Meeting

We lost 3-1 at Derby in April 2018. Callum Paterson opened the scoring for us but the hosts got the three points thanks to two goals from Cameron Jerome and one by Matej Vydra.

This was the rearranged match after the infamous snowgate.

Match Preview: Derby County vs. Cardiff City

CARDIFF CITY FC

Wednesday 11th September 2019

On Friday night, City return from the September international break to face Derby County at Pride Park - kick-off at 7:45pm.

Tickets are still available for Friday night's match at Pride Park.

The Opposition

Derby County are currently in 19th position on the Sky Bet Championship league table, having gathered six points from six matches played. In their last match ahead of the international break, the Rams lost 3-0 away from home against newly-promoted side Brentford.

Prior to this, the side’s sole win thus far in their 2019/20 league campaign came against Huddersfield Town, as the Rams defeated the Terriers 2-1 away from home thanks to a brace from former City loan player Tom Lawrence.

County's top goalscorer so far this season is Martyn Waghorn, who has scored three goals in six league appearances. Most recently, the forward scored a sixth minute penalty against West Bromwich Albion on August 24th, and scored a brace against Stoke City earlier in the month.

Derby County finished the 2018/19 season in sixth place on the Sky Bet Championship table, earning themselves a place in the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League. Drawn in the semi-final against Leeds United, the Rams lost the first leg 1-0 at Pride Park, before having to face the Whites at Elland Road less than a week later.

Despite Leeds doubling their lead to 2-0 on aggregate, County fought back to equalise and then take the lead for themselves within the first hour of play.

With United’s Stuart Dallas making the score 3-3 on aggregate shortly afterwards, it was substitute Jack Marriott who scored the winner for the Rams in the 84th minute, putting the side through to the play-off final against Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium.

Derby County lost the play-off final at a score of 2-1 against Villa, with the Rams’ goal being scored with ten minutes of normal time remaining as they chased the lead in London. With Aston Villa returning to the Premier League following a three-year absence, Derby manager Frank Lampard left the club for Chelsea in July 2019.

In the hot seat

Derby County’s manager is Phillip Cocu. The Dutch former player began his career on the field at AZ Alkmaar in 1988, before playing for Vitesse and PSV Eindhoven. Whilst playing for PSV in his first stint at the club, Cocu helped the side to win the 1996-97 Eredivisie, making 34 appearances throughout the campaign.

Phillip moved to play for Barcelona in 1998, where he stayed until 2004. During this time, the midfielder made 205 league appearances for the club, and won La Liga with the team in 1999, earning 79 points by the end of the season.

Returning to his home country, Cocu won the Eredivisie in three successive seasons with PSV, and left the club to finish his playing career at UAE club Al Jazira for the 2007-08 season.

Having retired as a player, Cocu set his sights on becoming a manager, and found himself managing PSV in 2013, having previously managed the club in a caretaker role.

In five years he led his home side to three further Eredivisie titles, including the 2015-16 season, where they overtook rivals Ajax on the last day of the season, with the Amsterdam club having led the league table throughout every week beforehand.

Since taking over at the club in July 2019, Phillip has managed eight matches, winning two, drawing three and losing three.

Derby County

Notable Meeting: Derby County 3-4 Cardiff City, February 14th 2017

Travelling City supporters were given a Valentine’s Day to remember in 2017, as the Bluebirds defeated Derby County 4-3 under the lights at Pride Park. Two early goals from Julien De Sart and Darren Bent gave the hosts an early and imposing lead, with City responding with a goal of their own by half-time through Kadeem Harris.

The winger equalised for City at the start of the second half, before Craig Noone took the lead for City before the hour mark with a great curled shot from outside the area.

Bent scored his second of the match with little more than fifteen minutes remaining, heading the ball into the far corner of City's net, a draw seeming certain in the closing moments of the fixture.

However, a 90th minute penalty was awarded to City, which Joe Ralls stepped up to take. The midfielder coolly sent ‘keeper Scott Carson the wrong way and the away end into raptures, giving Neil Warnock’s men all three points on the road.

Even though we still have a ridiculous amount of injuries Derby have been crap this season and look like they're badly missing Fikayo Timori, Mason Mount and Harry Wilson. I'll go Derby County 0-1 Cardiff City.

It didn't mention Jazz Richards having another "knock" in training, resulting in a swollen ankle? I cant believe a player can be so unlucky with injuries???

Really ?
Great save low to his left unsighted, the defender didnt react quick enough and they left Malone unmarked 3 yards out .
It was hardly Smithies fault was it.

That was down to poor defending again

It wasn’t a great save at all he should have held it and if not then made sure he pushed it wide. Etheridge would have prevented a number of goals Smithies has conceded.

He saved it from 4/5 yards out and pushed it away from goal, Bennett allowed the defender to get to the ball first and hooked it back in.
It was in no way Smithies fault
