Middlesbrough are poised to sue the English Football League, alleging that it failed to enforce its financial rules over Derby's purchase of Pride Park.
As reported by The Times, Middlesbrough have sent a legal letter to the EFL.
Derby finished sixth in the Championship last season and secured a place in the play-offs, finishing one point ahead of Middlesbrough, who were denied the possibility of the £180million windfall that accompanies promotion to the Premier League.
Middlesbrough have accused Derby of exploiting a loophole in the EFL's rules, enabling them to buy their own stadium, thus becoming financially compliant.

At the time, the ground was listed as an asset on Derby's books with a value of £41million.
This year Derby reported a profit of £14.6million pre-tax, when losses of more than £13million per year over three years breach the EFL's profit and sustainability rules.
Last week the EFL ordered property experts to valuate Pride Park.
