American owners name their price for Swansea City

Sunday 13th October 2019

Reports have emerged in the national media over a possible sale of the club

Swansea City's American owners are prepared to sell the club for a cut-price £38m, according to reports.

Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien took control of the Swans in 2016 but have regularly felt the wrath of the Jack Army over a perceived lack of investment, with their takeover coinciding with the club's slide in fortunes.

And The Sun newspaper claims the pair are open to offers for the Liberty Stadium outfit.

It reports that Kaplan and Levien would accept a figure of £38m, adding that a bonus sum of £15m would be required should Swansea be promoted to the Premier League within five years.

However, WalesOnline understands the owners have not indicated a desire to sell the club at present.

The pair watched Swansea for the first time under current head coach Steve Cooper at Charlton earlier this month.

Goals from Yan Dhanda and Andre Ayew saw the Swans come from behind to beat Lee Bowyer's men 2-1 in the English capital.

Before the match, Cooper met the American duo for only the second time since he joined the club, with their only other meeting taking place during the close season when Swansea's head coach travelled across the Atlantic.

Speaking after the game at The Valley, Cooper said: "I speak to them regularly and I've known for a while that they were coming over.

"I met them earlier, but they obviously didn't want to interfere too much with it being a matchday.

"Hopefully they were pleased with the result and the performance. It wasn't a great start but we're very much together at the moment."

It comes after severe cutbacks were made at the club.

The likes of Daniel James and Oli McBurnie were sold for hefty sums in the summer, while big earners including Wilfried Bony and Jordan Ayew were among those to depart South Wales ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

Cooper, as Graham Potter did last term, has placed a strong emphasis on utilising players from the club's academy.

Four of his six summer signings were loan deals, with Jake Bidwell joining for free after being released by Queens Park Rangers, while the only transfer fee paid out was to bring Kristoffer Peterson in from Dutch outfit Heracles.

Swansea City Supporters' Trust recently voted in favour of taking legal action against the Swans' current and former owners over the sale of the club.

The Trust claim they were left out of negotiations regarding the club's change in ownership little more than three years ago.

Kaplan and Levien purchased a 68% controlling stake in the club, with the Trust retaining 21.1%.

Allan, Americans Regarding football are hard to understand as I don’t see they have real enthusiasm etc ?

Everyone wants to make money, but they don’t understand our game on and off the pitch.

Who in their right mind would pay £38m (possibly rising to £53m) for a football club that doesn't even own their own ground?

On that basis and valuing us at the same price but owning our stadium we would be valued at £75m possibly rising to £90m?

Of course there is the issue of our debt but that is supposed to be wiped by 2021.

Ten pegs and fifteen lucky heathers and it's your mush!

Don't bother to reply Roathy 90% don't care about your owners wanting to sell, and 10% are sad they are selling but hopeful they can find worse owners

Sole control What about ospreys dont they share stadium? Or they are figment of imagination! Yes football club as rights to everything to do with football income but the ground is still shared.... so really club only as a value when making money which cannot do unless in premier league? Unless of course someone wants to gamble on them getting promotion quickly, like say it's loss making in championship unquestionably.

As you say, it's loss making in the Championship, and no one would know better than Cardiff City, being the amount of time you've spent in it. What puzzles me is why are you always in a hurry to get back into it each time you go up.

Ospreys continue to rent the stadium as part of the deal, however commercially speaking the club have control.

Well you not in hurry to go back to premier league that's for sure if hoping a 5yr plan will get you there as stated by yanks? One season is long time in championship as standards changes so much every season! As for hurry to go into championship being in premier league 8yrs done fck all to boost your finances if anything you are in worst state financially than when you 1st got there!

No, you asked if they still share the stadium.

You also made the incorrect assumption that the club only gets football income. That’s wrong.
