Gareth Bale

Wed Aug 25, 2010 1:29 pm

Caught a bit on the radio this morning about Gareth Bale when he was in school. Apparently his former games teacher said that he was excused from playing rugby because he was too skinny. Sorry but that has to be complete bullshit. I went to Lewis Boys and EVERYONE was forced to play rugby whether you were fat, thin, short, tall or whatever.
What about some of the players that have made it through to International level? English International William Winterbottom springs to mind, he was a right skinny string of piss but he was still better than anyone Wales had.
I think what was probably far more closer to the truth with regards to Gareth Bale not being forced to play was that he was on the books of Southampton FC's Academy and I'm sure they would have expected some sort of common sense from his school rugger teachers. Why that teacher felt the need to make it a skinny issue I don't know, perhaps he'd have stopped the Irish International (and I think British Lion) Peter Stringer playing as well because he was too little. Prat!

When I was in Lewis Boys football was practically banned, not officially of course, but not encouraged either. This French teacher tried to put a team together but wasn't given any school time. He then tried outside of school hours and he wasn't even allowed to use the mini bus, which stood idol when he wanted to use it. Out of the two full size pitches the school had, one was tidy but the other was a bog. Guess which one he was only allowed to use!
On the other hand the lads who played rugby were treated very well. Best part is they were always given better marks than everyone else, and that was widely accepted. The only trouble with that though is you had some of the most stupid people in the school thinking they were actually intelligent.
