Tuesday 11th February 2020

NEIL HARRIS:

Game goes ahead?

"Yes, as far as I’m aware."

"I’d imagine it’s going to be cold. We had to deal with that at Luton. They aren’t always pretty at this stage of the season, a lot on the weekend were quite similar to us at Luton. Competitive, is probably the nicest way to put it. It’s about trying to make the best of the conditions and you come out on top of the duels. The qualities the Cowleys have has managers, you have to outcompete them."

Team news:

NEIL HARRIS:

"Joe Ralls still not back in the training group. So no rush, but we want him back in as soon as possible. Isaac Vassell doing really well with his rehab recovery."

Connolly

'Conners is training every day, real issues with the ankles and body in general…. Good six weeks training on and off… won’t make it for tonight… likely to play first team? Probably not this season, be ready for the summer."

This club got the potential its not tapped into in recent years?

NEIL HARRIS:

"We want to give a pathway, we want to show a club philosophy."

"It’s a chicken and the egg scenario. You want to attract good young players and give them a chance, but you have to recruit them in the first place.

It’s not overnight success. Just because Joel and Sangy and Taz has been involved in the first team, it’s not just about ‘there we go, we’ve cracked it’. It takes time."

"It’s been an eyeopener to see how senior players have helped the young ones coming through, too. James McCarthy has done a brilliant job with the academy and I look forward to working with him closely moving forward.

It should excite the fans. They ultimately want to see Cardiff City fans playing in the first team. We aren’t going to see four or five of them in the first team, but in two or three years’ time moving forward."

NEIL HARRIS:

Momentum, looking up?

"Yeah, looking up. It’s crazy how it changes thought process and mindset. The nature of the Championship being so tight. It’s nicer to be eighth rather than 12th but there will be ebbs and flows. Coming out the right side of those results is key at this stage of the season."

"We want to sprint there but it’s not always possible. It’s just about winning the next game. I’ve talked about a big week, three games in a week in February and a large proportion of your games are done then, in terms of the rest of the season."

NEIL HARRIS:

Pleased with progress?

"I’m quietly pleased. You always want more. Barring QPR, we have been solid, reliable and everyone sees a structure in what you do.

With the ball, we could improve, definitely. I demand that. Over time we will get better."

"Results, a couple of draws into wins and we are top of that form guide which is the aim for us. Points total up, though, and draws count a lot. Small steps moving forward because every game brings a different challenge. No one has run away with it with ridiculous form, but every game the teams at the bottom are close as well. It’s a tight league and will continue to be tight because of FFP and it is competitive."

NEIL HARRIS:

Morison - a close connection between you two to narrow the gap between first team and academy?

"I think that’s right. We need the relationship. "

"I’ve insisted that the under-23s train with first team, in the building, same grass area, facilities as often as possible. We need eyes on them all the time. They need to feel part of first-team structure.Steve knows how I like to work on the training pitch and around the building."

"The strict discipline guidelines I have and I hope the younger players have that as well. If you’ve got that with the under-18s and under-23s, they get it as well. I’m hoping it brings fluidity to the group. Rammers (Ramasut) has the full respect of the whole academy, Livers (David Livermore), James Rowberry. He knows the club inside out and is a very, very talented coach. He’s a coach educator so he’s very comfortable on the grass."

"Steve Morison brings a lack of coaching experience but has done all his badges and has enthusiasm a wealth of knowledge within the game and relationships within the game with the Welsh FA and the first-team setup with us. The process has been huge and diligent and Macca (James McCarthy) takes credit for that. We are really looking forward to working as a group."

Category one?

"Don’t know exact timescales."

"Takes a lot of planning and a lot of investment. That becomes a board decision. Would I support that? Yeah of course. It gives you the avenue to recruit players from a greater distance and the programme becomes bigger. It’s a huge investment ultimately what’s best for our club to get players in the academy in the first team? But you have to balance off the investment, have you got the right structure within the club? "

"The right amount of coaches? The right facilities to train to have bigger groups and more staff? It’s not just a simple decision, we’ll chuck money at that and that’s what we are doing. It does take time. We are in the process with the board and the academy to make decisions like that. But getting the coaching set-up correct, as we have, is a huge step forward for us."

NEIL HARRIS:

Catchment area bigger with Swans changes?

"It’s not just about players developing. Developing off the pitch is massive. Physically, our academy as a group we’re not the biggest, to play Championship and PL football you’ve got to be physical. PL everyone can run and the size of the players. If you’re not over 6ft you’ve got to be extremely talented… Hoilett… they’re the levels we need to get to – work in the gym etc…."

Sanderson, Smith, U23s?

"Brad’s playing tonight, Dion won’t - he’s in the reckoning for tomorrow night… he’s played this season, Brad hasn’t. Brad will play tonight and hopefully play 80-90, then we’ll get him in the first-team environment."

Ex Millwall player, Steve Morison the new under-23s boss

Cardiff City have confirmed that former Millwall and Wales striker Steve Morison will take over the Bluebirds’ under-23s.

The Bluebirds have been searching for a new Under-23s manager since parting company with Andy Legg at the end of last year as part of a major restructure of their youth setup.

And Morison, who has been helping the academy at Northampton Town since last October, is very close with Cardiff boss Neil Harris, having played both with him and under him at Millwall.

Mendez-Laing?

"He’s gym-based, treatment room, that boring stage of exercise, long way off strength wise… Mendy’s not going to be on the grass for at least four weeks, maybe longer, looking at next season to actually play."

Luton win, spring in step?

NEIL HARRIS:

"Spring in step over the last couple of weeks."

"Certainly towards the end of the transfer window, players leaving, right times, right for them, right for the group. The players know they are there and it’s a really good group of lads that want to learn. It’s a working group now and a spring in the step. A little bit of momentum, definitely, that we have to carry on. Looking forward, the group are looking forward to each game and it breeds confidence."

U23s, Morison, you know him well…

NEIL HARRIS:

"Really pleased. The due diligence to go into that appointment was huge. The outstanding level of candidates, I’m really impressed with the calibre. It’s a wonderful opportunity, that U23s role at the moment. To have Steve and Tom coming in is brilliant. Tom brings continuity, but also an understanding of the academy."

"Steve Morison brings a wealth of experience from the Football League, Premier League and international set-up with Wales. He is a young, hungry coach which shows we want a young, hungry squad. We need that continuity through the squad. He was my club captain at Millwall and is a leader. He has always wanted to coach and he knows what I want and he knows my thought process. I’ll only play the young players when they are ready."

More possession – how far off your style?

NEIL HARRIS:

"Pre-season is vital. Someone said to me the other day we’re playing every four days – not training every day, can’t train fully day before the game… Time on the grass, conditioning and structurally has been hugely limited. What do I like in a team? Extra pass sometimes but not always, teams passing from the back… we want to pass the ball more but you also have to mix up your play…. Getting mix between passing ball forward and… .getting space in the opponents’ half and causing damage… other part is set plays and causing problems… what I have got is really good characters… Ultimately a mix of all of them."

Vaulks

"Great for me, great for the national set-up, desperate to be in the squad and play well for me. Will when he’s played in previous seasons at previous clubs, he’s played with freedom whereas we’ve gone a bit more structured… some players had done that before, Will hadn’t, needed extra work off the pitch, positional development analysis etc… "

"I’ve been really pleased with him. He’s one who’s used the FA Cup games to grab a place… Seen Whyte do it, Patto do it, Sol step up… when we give people an opportunity, we want them to take it. Middle of the park we’re really strong at the moment and we’ve not had the opportunity to play three midfielders yet, something we’d like to use moving forward."
