Don’t read this if you don’t want bad news

Mon Mar 16, 2020 12:39 pm

There’s a lot of people who seem to be trying to play down this virus, even on this forum, claiming it’s over the top, media scare mongering etc. If you want the truth, the truth is the general media particularly on TV are down playing this. They are saying a lot of truth, but they are focussing so much on the unhealthy elderly that the UK is under false hope. It’s not something that is going to just blow over, it’s not something that 100% only effects unhealthy old people. It can and HAS killed healthy people as young as in the 20’s. I’ve attached a few articles to hopefully shine some light on what is actually going on around the world around us. Like the title says, if you don’t want to know then don’t read it, it’s as simple as that. I’m not here to debate how serious this is, it’s just a fact at this point. There’s more sources out there with even more scary facts and stats, but at the time of writing this I couldn’t find any quick enough. Just everyone, please keep yourselves informed, not from just the BBC, ITV, or whatever easy access television program or headline you want to look at. The reality of the situation is out there for you to read up on if you really want to know about it.

I have read the links you have posted and most put the death rate @ 1% or 9 people for every 1000. The official percentage is quoted as 3.4% but this is an over estimation because those who have mild symptoms are not included in the calculations.

If you look at the bigger picture you will find that it is the elderly and those with compromised immune systems who are most at risk.

However, there will be anomalies such as the death of a 29 year old Doctor and another 35 year old. These are 2 deaths out of 6,500 worldwide.

If you are not scaremongering then maybe you should have more perspective and look at the evidence dispassionately.

Have you read the articles? Only bothered to read the ages of 25 victims as was genuinely interested. However all but three are over 60, ten of them are in their 80s for crying out loud. Hardly young.

As for that article from the sun. You do realise that's 70 more percent of 1 percent, ie f all. Not 70 percent of people will die?!

Educate yourself.

70% of 2%.

If you read past what you want you will see it says up to 2%. You just read “about 1%” and quit reading.

I don’t need educating mate. The amount of people disregarding all this information is astounding.

“Just a few who are young heathy people have died” and the response from people is “oh it’s just a one off here and there”. A one off means the public outlook that only the sick and elderly are dying is completely wrong. Bare in mind the reports of those young people dying are very old articles, so I doubt very much that those are the only young healthy casualty’s.

Don’t take it out on me that the world is going to pot at the moment.

I'm certainly not panicking. I think the death toll in the UK stands at just over 20. That equates to the number of deaths on our roads in the last 4 days. I don't stop driving despite the stats suggesting that's the biggest threat to my life. I try to drive carefully in an effort not to become another statistic, and I will try and use common sense in an attempt not to become another coronavirus statistic. It's a serious situation, but going ott will not help much. My mother who is still alive and is approaching 90 is not in the slightest bit worried. Perhaps the media will find it harder to cause panic amongst those who had to dodge bombs to stay alive. As she said this morning, going into meltdown is not going to improve her chances of survival. I think she is more interested in what's happening in Coronation Street than what's happening on the BBC news.

If you read all your articles there is nothing to suggest that there is a real and imminent danger to 99% of young and healthy people. There will always be anomalies for reason we don't know about, but that is no reason to go overboard.

For some reason Tony people and the media seem more attracted to bad news. The following article could just as easily been copied and pasted:- There's not enough information that's readily available yet to determine the true survival rate of COVID-19, says Dr. Brown, "but given the tens of thousands of people infected with the virus, the survival rate will be very, very high," he adds. Manisha Juthani, MD, a Yale Medicine infectious disease specialist, agrees. “It can be scary to watch the news and see the death toll rise from the coronavirus overseas. But we now know that most cases of coronavirus in China have been mild and less than 3% of patients have died,” she points out.

I want to make it perfectly clear. I’m not telling everyone to panic. Don’t read the articles I specifically selected if you like, look up whatever you’re concerned about and see what comes up. That’s all I’m saying. Stay informed, look up the things yourselves, I just find that if you rely purely on just the BBC or ITV to get your information, there will be a lot of information missing for their own agenda.

No need to panic, that’s the worst thing that can happen. I just think taking it more seriously will be key to getting over this, whenever that is.

I actually rely on medical evidence, journal articles and chatting to doctor friends.

Which all state pretty much what you're not.

Yes, one or two may buck the trend, but young (healthy) people are not at risk of death.

People with pre existing respiratory and cardiovascular problems however are. And guess what, a lot of old people have these conditions. It's also no coincidence that smokers and people with 25+ BMI are also high risk. But guess what, these can be young too. Life choices I suppose. The majority of those dying are as a doctor would say last life expectancy or within 5 years.

I'm a fit, healthy, 30 something, my only worry is passing the virus on to someone who fits in to the vulnerable category. Which is pretty much how all my friends, colleagues and people on here feel too.

There was a Dr on the tele this morning who said that a healthy immune system is key to surviving this virus. Then he said that sleep deprivation was a major cause of a poor immune system,so that poor overworked Chinese Dr that died probably had little or no sleep trying to help his countryman. In his efforts to be the forum authority I think you may have overlooked this.

A doctor that came into my wife's place of work told her staff no to stress it as we are all going to get it anyway.

Firstly, the fact you even considered The Sun a valid source to provide "evidence" discredits much of what you post. If you want to hear direct from one of the worlds leading experts on the matter, and skip out the media bullshit you are polluting peoples brains with, then go onto youtube and watch the Joe Rogan podcast when he talks to a man called Michael Osterholm.

I completely agree, but most people wouldn't have considered sleep deprivation or high stress levels as a factor for being unhealthy. Even I didn't consider being stressed could have an impact on this virus's intensity levels and how it effects you. But it's fairly obvious if you think about it, but like I said people don't.

Compromised immune systems, so people who already get sick alot, yes like older people, even people in the 40's age range are getting really sick in particular (no, not death, but they're symptoms are more intense based off what I'm seeing around the world) because 40's or there abouts have alot of resonsibilities and typically alot of stress meaning compromised immune systems. So the best advice would be for as many people as possible to see a physician and make sure you're immune system is as good as possible.

In regards to the deaths, yeah I completely accept that it's only a handful of fatalities within a certain young/healthy demographic, and it is possible that it's due to being stressed, sleep deprived, etc all of the above.

But that's the thing that the majority of the people I speak to don't realize. Yes, the chances are if you're of a certain age with no illnesses, you'll probably be fine, but the fact that if you're sleep deprived or stressed that can cause you to suffer with this virus more than you need to, that's what people don't realize. I think it's important for everyone to keep an eye on their habits and make sure they do whatever they can to avoid worrying/stressing about anything, etc.

In regards to being sleep deprived, that's the worry about not only nurses/doctors and everyone doing what they can to fully combat the virus, but also unsuspecting victims like gamers who play alot of games on their consoles/pc until the early hours, yes, kids are mostly doing that and they seem to be avoiding alot of the symptoms, but there's a large chunk of young and older adults who game way too long also.

There's alot to worry about, but there's also alot you can do to combat the effects of the virus, starting from now, before you catch it, think diets, being in a quiet environment, acknowledging what brings on your stress in order to find a way around it. Yeah, it's not all doom and gloom, which I have a habit of focusing on the nasty bits, but it's only because I feel like people are getting somewhat misinformed or at least only being informed some things because it's important to know these things I think..

Those articles suggest health workers are at a higher risk due to greater exposure than the general public, and the young man who died showed no comorbidity, but they didn’t know if he had some genetic predisposition to heart failure.

Those are important factors in these cases. Stating these people are healthy is misinforming, because you don’t know and neither did local sources. I don’t think you’ve read these in full, or rushed in putting them up.

Substantial undocumented infection facilitates the rapid dissemination of novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV2) - https://science.sciencemag.org/content/ ... ce.abb3221

Here's what a proper article looks like.

And as suggested the undocumented cases have led to the rapid spread, pretty obvious really, but they've done the maths. If as estimated there were another 86% of cases, then the mortality rate is a lot lower than your 2% or The Sun's rise of 70%.
