The simple way to help the most vulnerable as coronavirus cases rise

CARDS

People are being urged to send postcards offering help to the most vulnerable.

Communities across Wales and the rest of the UK have come together to help the most vulnerable during the coronavirus outbreak.

Older people and those with underlying health conditions are considered to be most vulnerable to the virus.

People are being urged to send postcards to their elderly and vulnerable neighbours to offer help while they self isolate. A card printing company in Cardiff has made special cards for people to share with those who are self isolating.

Toni Hall, owner of Banter Cards, said the cards will be provided for free.

"We just wanted to do anything we could do to help. It's scary to think there are people stuck in their houses with no one to help, or have no family. I'm not worrying about the business, just going with the advice, whatever happens happens. I want to keep our staff safe and be in a position to make sure they are still paid."

The postcards which read ''Do more to help each other'', have spaces to fill in details about what you can do to help, such as pick up shopping, collect prescriptions, and post mail.

It's not the only act of kindness in the community since the outbreak. People across Wales have been volunteering to help those self-isolating in their communities.

Hundreds of people in the Rhondda have volunteered to help, with more than 2,500 people joining the dedicated Facebook page.

Volunteers living in Grangetown are also offering to help those self-isolating by picking up food supplies and prescriptions, posting mail, or just having a chat on the phone.

Elsewhere, Covid Mutual Aid UKwas set up for volunteers to help the most at need with tasks. The online resource helps connect people to their nearest groups, volunteers and those in need.

Other links for potential volunteers include these below but the list is not exhaustive and anyone with any genuine knowledge of local voluntary groups in the south east Wales area are invited to add to the list

I'm sure all genuine offers of help will be welcomed in the community...

During these strange times, it is imperative that we (as a community) look after those more vulnerable amongst us and ideas such as the one above are both needed and welcomed by many

The easiest/simplest way to help is by contacting those around us who we know and are familiar with, as this gives a certain confidence with relationships that may already be in place

In the supermarkets, it seem people are only helping themselves; but outside it can be a different story, as friends and neighbours help each other at this surreal time

I;m 68. in a self isolation band for astma.Ive decided after having friday off to go back to the food bank in newport I’ve worked in for the last 6 years.I will be packing food as I now cant deal with a public.
I feel I’ve been called back by an higher power although i don’t believe in god to serve the people on the fringes of society
when i left friday we had hardly any food so if you do believe in god start praying for the 2 fishes and 5 loaves
