Cardiff City boss Neil Harris' 'meltdown' warning to football chiefs over season as he delivers key updates

Sunday 22nd March 2020

The manager spoke about what's happening at the club right now amid coronavirus precautions

Cardiff City boss Neil Harris insists he’s "extremely confident" that the current season will be completed, but has warned that players could risk being burned out if the calendar is not properly managed.

The EFL season has been further suspended until April 30 due to the current coronavirus outbreak, after originally pencilling in April 3 as a potential return date.

Doubts remain over whether the footballing calendar will pick up again during the new timeframe, and there has been a big debate over what to do with the rest of the current campaign.

Some have suggested that the season should be declared null and void, but it’s emerged that the preference among Championship clubs is to finish the season.

And, speaking to BBC Radio Wales, Harris says he’s continuing preparations for Cardiff’s last nine games, adding that he is convinced the current campaign will be allowed to finish, although he admits that the resulting fixture congestion does risk burning players out.

NEIL HARRIS:

“We’ve been given a guideline that the season might start again on Saturday, May 2, so of course it’s important to be working towards that. But as we’ve seen that’s not set in stone at the moment.

“Things are so fast moving and so changeable that that could be a month later.

“So we’re second guessing things a little, but what we do know is that when the season does recommence - and it will - I’m extremely confident that this season will finish before the next one begins.

“Whenever that is, we’ll have to see. But it will finish and we have to make sure we’re ready for it. But we can’t keep training now individually, get back training as a group, play the games, finish one season and then have a week off before starting again.

“That will just lead to meltdown within players and squads come December and January. There has to be a rest and recuperation time between one season and the next.”

Neil Harris says the club are currently following EFL guidelines in dealing with the virus, with only injured players allowed near the training ground, where they are undergoing one-on-one sessions with physiotherapists.

NEIL HARRIS:

“Health-wise the lads are OK,” he added. “We have got players and staff who are isolating at the moment. So they’re not at the training ground.

“Nobody’s had a positive test for the coronavirus within our immediate group. But as we know that doesn’t mean we’ve not all sampled it or have got it.

“At the moment there’s no contact with anybody apart from individual physios seeing individual players coming back from injuries, and they’re coming in at separate times during the week.”

NEIL HARRIS:

Injuries

Harris admits there’s a good chance that some of his injured stars could be back by the time action returns.

“Each time the games get pushed back it changes your plans, because certain teams might have players missing," he added.

“At the moment, we’d have no Lee Tomlin, no Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, no Greg Cunningham. By the time the games start, certainly Tommo, possibly Mendy, and maybe even Greg, are all going to be available again.” :thumbright: :bluebird:

Cardiff City manager Neil Harris has suggested that the Bluebirds could potentially be boosted by the returns of all three of Lee Tomlin, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Greg Cunningham when the season eventually resumes.

Harris’ side have been without Tomlin since the attacking midfielder suffered an medial ligament injury last month, which was set to keep him out of action for around six to eight weeks, but with the EFL announcing the season will now be suspended until at least the end of April that could give him a chance of featuring.

Meanwhile, the Bluebirds have also been without both Mendez-Laing and Cunningham, with the pair suffering from a respective hamstring and a torn cruciate ligament injury, and the Bluebirds would have been planning to miss the pair for at least a few of their remaining nine games.

Neil Harris delivers clear warning over potential impact season extension could have on Cardiff City

Cardiff City manager Neil Harris has suggested that he is confident that the EFL season will resume eventually and be played out to a conclusion, but also warned against the impacts that starting next season so soon after this one has finished could have on the players.

Harris, like the rest of the managers up and down the country, will be doing all they can to try and prepare for when the season does eventually resume, with the EFL having announced this week that the campaign will be suspended until at least the end of April.

Cardiff are one of the teams who are currently still in the mix of sides challenging to finish the season inside the Championship’s top six, with the Bluebirds currently sat in ninth place in the table just two points adrift of sixth-placed Preston North End, which means they have a realistic chance of the play-offs when the season does resume.

I cant see the UK being out of the Coronavirus for quite some time. We will be lucky to start a new season in August. So forget this season and start a new season when we are clear of this virus. It is only football, people are dying and many more will also die. So don't worry about the triviality of finishing a football season.

Due to us being outside the playoffs and Leeds in the automatic position and The Bin Dippers only two wins from winning the Prem I am fully in support to completely abolish this season and start again next season. Nothing personal obviously

Why are they bleating about possible burnout? There's been no football for 2 weeks and there wont be any for at least another 10 weeks, that's 12 weeks off at least. They are still getting paid and all they have to do during this time is to keep themselves fit, something that a lot of people do and pay to do it. The season needs 5 weeks to finish, playing Saturdays and Tuesdays, which they do for a lot of the season anyway. If the season were to finish by early July, then they could start the new season slightly later, ditch the League Cup for one year, ditch the international breaks which no one likes anyway, and we could be back on track by Christmas. 46 league games is 23 weeks playing twice a week, that's 5 and a bit months, start it September, and you have 8 months to do next season.
It's extraordinary times at the moment, and everyone has to adjust. And if they are missing their trips to some paradise island and their 2 grand a night hotels, tough. We're all going to miss a holiday this year, but if we come out alive it's a bonus.

fatigue is caused when players are asked to play a lot of football in a short space of time. and unfortunately not playing for2/3 months doesn't build up resilience to it..
don't see this season being played out ..

Not a hope in hell this season will get completed

If it did an easy get out for a team in the relegation zone with say 4 games left.. a staff member has tested positive for virus and been in contact with all players so we have to self isolate sorry can’t play anymore games etc etc
