Interesting study done by Oxford University, they have done their model on Coronavirus and believe their theory suggests that half of the UK population have had the virus, which if true is massive and encouraging.

However, the imperial college of London, which is the theoretical model the UK government are going with, suggests that only a small percentage of the UK population has had it. I hope the boffins at Oxford Uni are correct

Morning ALL - Hope we are all doing well and in good health - Saturday's Update starts with Good News ...

Frontline NHS staff in England will start being tested this weekend to see whether they have coronavirus.

Workers with symptoms or those who live with people who have symptoms will be checked - starting with critical care doctors and nurses.

It follows criticism over a lack of testing for health workers. At a Downing Street news conference on Friday, Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove said hundreds of antigen tests - which check whether people currently have the disease - would be given to frontline staff this weekend.

He said testing would be scaled up "dramatically" next week, with testing of ambulance crews, paramedics and GPs expected to follow. It will later be expanded to cover social care staff.

Re: UPDATED DAILY : UK CORONAVIRUS - UPDATE 28/03/20

The number of people to have died with the coronavirus in the UK has reached 1,019.

The latest government figures on Saturday showed there were another 260 deaths in the UK in a day, up from 759 on Friday.

There are now 17,089 confirmed cases in the UK.

It comes as the government said it was ramping up testing for frontline hospital staff who have symptoms, or who live with people who have symptoms.

Critical care doctors and nurses will be prioritised first, with testing expected to follow for A&E staff, paramedics and GPs.

In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, health workers are already being tested.

The new deaths include a further 246 people in England, with patients aged between 33 and 100 years old.

All of them had underlying health conditions except 13 people, who were aged 63 and over.

Sat Mar 28, 2020 3:27 pm

The jump in deaths is the biggest day-on-day increase the UK since the outbreak began. The number of deaths is 34% higher than Friday's figure.

The Department of Health and Social Care also corrected figures that it shared on Friday, saying the number of confirmed cases was 36 fewer than it had tweeted, at 14,543.

Among the latest public figures to announce they have tested positive for the virus is Scottish Secretary Alister Jack, who is self-isolating.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock are self-isolating after testing positive for the virus. England's chief medical officer, Prof Chris Whitty, is also self-isolating, but has not tested positive.

Former Cabinet Secretary Gus O'Donnell said politicians needed to "obey their own rules much more strictly" on social distancing.

Morning All - Sunday 29th March - Message from the PM ...

Coronavirus: Things will get worse before getting better, PM warns

The prime minister has warned that the coronavirus crisis will get worse before it gets better, in a letter being sent to every UK household.

Boris Johnson, who is self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19, says stricter restrictions could be put in place if necessary.

Britons will also get a leaflet detailing government rules on leaving the house and health information.

It follows criticism over the clarity of government advice to date.

The number of people who have died with coronavirus in the UK has now reached 1,019, with a further 260 deaths announced on Saturday.

There are now 17,089 confirmed cases in the UK.

In the letter being sent to 30 million households at an anticipated cost of £5.8m, Mr Johnson writes: "From the start, we have sought to put in the right measures at the right time.

"We will not hesitate to go further if that is what the scientific and medical advice tells us we must do."

Tough measures to tackle the spread of coronavirus, including a ban on public gatherings of more than two people and the closure of shops selling non-essential goods, were introduced last week.
"It's important for me to level with you - we know things will get worse before they get better," the letter reads.

"But we are making the right preparations, and the more we all follow the rules, the fewer lives will be lost and the sooner life can return to normal."

Experts have said they expect the number of coronavirus cases and deaths to continue to rise for the next two to three weeks, before the effects of social distancing measures and restrictions on everyday life begin to have an impact.

Responding to reports current measures could be in place until June, Scotland's chief medical officer Catherine Calderwood told BBC Radio 4's Broadcasting House: "The modelling that's been done, and that I have seen, has always said that we need at least 13 weeks of some sort of measures in order to really get this virus away from spreading amongst people.

"When you have a shorter period of time, as I understand other countries have done, as soon as you lift the measures the virus comes back again because you haven't stopped it transmitting amongst lots of people."

In his letter, Mr Johnson describes the pandemic as a "moment of national emergency", and reiterates the government guidance to stay at home to avoid putting pressure on the NHS, so that lives can be saved.

The prime minister acknowledges the restrictions will have a financial impact on families.

However, writing after ministers unveiled billions of pounds of help for workers and businesses, he says: "The government will do whatever it takes to help you make ends meet and put food on the table."

Mr Johnson also praises the work of doctors, nurses and other carers as well as well as the hundreds of thousands of people who have volunteered to help the most vulnerable.

The leaflet sent alongside the letter includes guidance on hand-washing, an explanation of coronavirus symptoms, the government rules on leaving the house and advice on shielding vulnerable people.

UK fatalities rise by 209 in one day

Here's a little more detail on the news that 1,228 people have died in the UK since the outbreak began.

The latest figures show there have been a further 209 deaths over the past 24 hours. That's slightly lower than Saturday's rise of 260.

The vast majority of those - 190 - have come in England.

Wales has reported 10 new deaths, there have been a further six in Northern Ireland, and one in Scotland.

The Department of Health and Social care said there were now 19,522 confirmed cases in the UK.

New cases slightly down as well. If we can keep new infections at around that 2.5k /day or less then hopefully we can escape the full horror that's unfolded elsewhere. Going to be a bleak April whatever but acting responsibly will save the lives of others.

Harries - Six months before we can review

Paul Brand from ITV News asks Dr Harries if current measures in place will continue beyond three weeks.

She points out the UK has only had one week of the measure and that the prime minister said the situation would be "reviewed" after the three weeks.

But she adds it would be "quite dangerous" to then revert to normal life.

"If we stop then all of our efforts will be waisted", she adds.

She says that measures may be reduced gradually over time.

Dr Harries says it might be two or three months before we see the longer-term impact, and about three to six months before to see "at which point we can actually get back to normal".

"And it is plausible it could go further than that", she adds.

Socially Spain and Italy differ significantly from the likes of UK, Germany etc., in that they have much larger family units within the same household, usually including elderly relatives. It's been argued by some experts that lockdowns in these 2 countries have been counter-productive..

This was perhaps the most explicit sense we’ve had yet of the possible timeline for all this - and how long it could continue to have such massive implications for our day to day lives.

Prepare for this to be a slog has been the consistent message today - with the latest estimate from the deputy chief medical officer for England being that it could be around six months.

That takes us until the end of October – until things are returning to normal. It may be quicker than that – it may take longer.

She is not saying the current – rather drastic – adjustments we’ve all had to make to our lives will stay in place until then.

But that all of these measures – staying at home, lots of shops being shut, etc – will have to be eased very, very gradually to ensure there isn’t a sudden spike of new cases shortly afterwards.

The government, the scientists, can't be specific because they are dealing with what they call a moving target.

But what is now clear is this virus is likely to continue to have profound effects on our way of life – our businesses, the education of our children, our incomes, our holidays, our ability to move around and see relatives – for quite some time to come.

The move came as regional airline boss Loganair said airlines were unlikely to survive without a government bailout.

'No doubt' lockdown will be longer than three weeks

Mark Drakeford says he has “no doubt at all” the restrictions will go beyond three weeks and warned individuals and businesses to expect a “long haul”.

He was responding to comments made by England’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Jenny Harries, who said she expected the restrictions to continue for up to six months.

Mr Drakeford said: “There is no doubt at all that we are facing restrictions beyond the three weeks of the immediate period that we made on Monday of last week.

“I think there will be a gradual reduction in restrictions over time.

“We may need significant restrictions for longer than the original three weeks and beyond that period there will be time when we don’t just go from everything being restricted to nothing being restricted. That’s going to be a long haul, a difficult haul for individuals and businesses.”
