A law requiring workplaces in Wales to take precautions for Covid will be axed from Monday.

It is one of two remaining Covid measures the Welsh government has in place.

Rules requiring facemasks in health and social care settings will remain in force for at least another three weeks.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said the mask rule would help control the spread of Covid where "some of the most vulnerable people" are treated or live.

The move to scrap restrictions on businesses comes despite recent swab survey data suggesting record infections.

Mr Drakeford said his government's decision "doesn't mean the pandemic is over".

He added: "Unfortunately coronavirus is still with us - we've seen a spike in infections over the last month, with large numbers of people falling ill and a surge in hospital admissions.

"We hope we are beginning to turn the corner. But it's really important we all continue to take steps to protect ourselves and each other."

I’m sure Drakeford wants Covid to be around as long as possible. That little bit of power. Yes, Covid hadn’t gone but it’s getting weaker and weaker.

Not sure where he gets this surge in covid hospital admission from it certainly not happening here..... the surge is in people being admitted to hospital because they haven't been treated for original ailments but
have covid when tested.... and this is same all over UK ... talk about manipulating things he is an expert at it. :banghead:

Boris Johnson sorry for party as Labour calls apology a joke -

Boris Johnson has faced fury in the Commons after receiving a fine from the police for breaking lockdown laws.

Most Tory MPs rallied behind the PM as he repeatedly apologised for attending a birthday party in Downing Street in 2020, saying he did not think he was breaking the law at the time.

But Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer called his apology "a joke" as MPs from all parties criticised his behaviour.

Tory MP Mark Harper called on the PM to quit over his "indefensible" actions.

Labour has secured a vote on Thursday on whether a Commons committee should investigate if the PM misled Parliament.

Knowingly misleading Parliament is a resigning offence under government rules.

If MPs vote for an inquiry, the privileges committee - made of of seven MPs - could recommend sanctions, including an apology, a suspension or even expulsion from the Commons.

But the move is unlikely to succeed because the majority of Conservative MPs are standing by the PM, and they are likely to be ordered to vote against the Labour motion.

Covid: Small loans vital to small businesses, say experts -

Businesses who are struggling post-pandemic need better access to small loans, experts say.

Charity Purple Shoots said it had helped companies that might struggle to get finance from big banks.

Business specialist Prof Dylan Jones-Evans said the Welsh government's development bank should offer more help to these businesses.

The Welsh government said it was committed to giving financial aid to small business.

Microfinance is the lending of relatively small amounts, often to small businesses or sole-traders.

Banks usually focus on bigger loans but these little ones can allow firms to make small but meaningful improvements.

Covid in Wales: FM accused of dodging care homes questions -

The first minister of Wales has been accused by the Tories of dodging questions over why tests for patients discharged into care homes were delayed at the start of the pandemic.

It comes after the High Court found policies in England on discharging untested patients were unlawful.

Andrew RT Davies questioned in the Senedd why it was not policy to test until two weeks after England.

Mark Drakeford said the ruling found "nothing illegal" in Wales.

He told Senedd members decisions to send untested patients from hospitals to care homes at the start of the pandemic will have to be examined by the UK Covid inquiry.

A solicitor representing 350 families who lost loved ones to Covid has said it is likely they will look to bring legal action against the Welsh government following the High Court ruling.

In England, all patients were tested when discharged from 15 April 2020. But in Wales, the policy change was made a fortnight later.

Keir Starmer: I'll quit if given Covid lockdown fine by police -

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has said he will quit if given a fine by Durham police for breaking lockdown rules.

Deputy leader Angela Rayner also confirmed she would step down if fined.

The opposition leader has been under pressure after police announced a probe into an event in April 2021, when he had curry and beer at an MP's office during an election campaign visit.

Sir Keir has insisted rules were not broken and Labour says it has evidence showing it was a work event.

Responding to Sir Keir's statement, Culture Minister Chris Philp accused the Labour leader trying to "pressure the police into clearing him", which he called "deeply inappropriate".

Conservatives had previously accused Sir Keir of "rank double standards" as the opposition leader had called for Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak to resign over attending Downing Street lockdown events.

Covid: Fourth-dose jab trial shows good boost -

Fourth-dose Covid booster vaccines increase protection against Covid-19, particularly in people aged over 70, according to a UK trial.

But scientists say any short-term protection against infection is likely to fall away quickly.

The UK rolled out fourth doses to over-75s and the most vulnerable in April.

A larger group of people may be offered a booster in the autumn, but any decision will be based on advice from the UK's vaccine committee.

It is likely to look at whether new worrying variants are spreading, and Covid pressure on hospitals.

Some countries, such as Israel and Germany, have already started offering all adults a fourth dose.

Also - Covid Fines -

The number of fines for breaking covid rules in Downing Street and Whitehall has now topped a-hundred.

The Metropolitan Police has handed out another fifty fixed penalty notices for breaches of Covid restrictions in Downing Street and other Government buildings.

Sue Gray report: Drunken No 10 party culture in lockdown laid bare -

Staff partied in Downing Street while the rest of the UK was in lockdown with the approval of their bosses, according to Sue Gray's report.

The senior civil servant said many events "should not have been allowed" and the PM and his officials "must bear responsibility for this culture".

The report highlights excessive drinking, with staff being sick, and abuse of cleaning and security staff.

Warnings about parties breaking Covid rules were ignored, it says.

Boris Johnson told MPs he took "full responsibility for everything that took place on my watch", had been "humbled by the whole experience" and had learned lessons.

And, speaking at a Downing Street press conference, he ruled out resigning, saying: "I've got to keep moving forward."

But Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer - who is himself being investigated by police over his own lockdown event - called on Tory MPs to tell Mr Johnson "the game is up" and it was "time to pack his bags".

Early signs that Covid may be rising in parts of the UK -

There are early signs of a possible increase in the number of people testing positive for Covid in England and Northern Ireland, officials from the Office for National Statistics say.

Their report suggests the small rise is likely to be driven by the BA.4 and BA.5 variants of Omicron.

Studies show these variants may be able to spread slightly more easily than "older" Omicron variants.

The latest estimates suggest around 990,000 people in the UK have Covid.

That is about 1.5% of the population (roughly one in 65 people) - up from about one in 70 the week before.

The latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) covers the week ending 2 June.

Other COVID NEWS -

Manic Street Preachers have had to cancel their outdoor Peterborough show after the lead singer James Dean Bradfield tested positive for Covid.

The rock band were due to perform on Peterborough Embankment on Sunday as part of their summer shows.

Covid: Free lateral flow tests in Wales until 31 July -

Lateral flow tests will remain free for people in Wales with Covid symptoms until the end of July.

But the main self-isolation payment ends on 30 June although a similar scheme for social care will continue.

This comes as the latest estimates suggested another rise in infections in Wales.

England and Scotland have already ended access to free LFTs to most people, with Northern Ireland due to end free access at the end of June.

The continued availability of free LFTs to symptomatic people "should make a difference" according to Dr Sir Frank Atherton, the chief medical officer for Wales.

Self-isolation payments of £500 will end on 30 June, while the Covid-19 statutory sick pay enhancement scheme will be extended until 31 August to support social care staff to stay away from work if they test positive.

Covid infections jump by half a million in UK, says ONS -

Covid infections are rising again across the UK, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show.

An estimated 2.3 million people or one in 30 has the virus - a rise of 32% on the week before.

The rise is being driven by two new fast-spreading sub-variants of Omicron - called BA.4 and BA.5.

People can be infected even if they've had Covid before, but jabs are helping to protect against serious illness.

Health officials are urging anyone over 75 who has not had a vaccine or booster in the past six months, to get one.

In the week ending 24 June, the ONS estimates Covid rates were:

One in 30 in England - up from one in 40 the week before
One in 30 in Wales - up from one in 45
One in 25 in Northern Ireland - up from one in 30
One in 18 in Scotland - up from one in 20

Thousands of small firms go bust owing millions in bounce back Covid loans -

More than 16,000 businesses which took out a type of government-backed Covid loan have gone bust without paying the money back, the BBC has found.

Hundreds of directors, who got loans they were not entitled to, have also been disqualified.

The cost to the taxpayer of these insolvencies could be as much as £500m, and is likely to grow as more companies go under.

Questions are now being asked about what is being done to recoup the money.

The figures, obtained by the BBC under a Freedom of Information request, have been described as "shocking" by a former head of the Serious Fraud Office.

Sir David Green QC describes checks the government required banks to do on bounce back loan applicants as "hopelessly inadequate".A total of 1.5 million loans worth £47bn were handed out. One of several measures designed to help businesses survive the pandemic, the loans were supposed to be paid back within 10 years. But in the rush to save the economy, checks on borrowers were limited.

Covid: UK first country to approve dual-strain vaccine -

The UK has become the first country to approve a dual vaccine which tackles both the original Covid virus and the newer Omicron variant.

Ministers say the vaccine will now form part of the autumn booster campaign.

Moderna thinks 13 million doses of its new vaccine will be available this year, but 26 million people are eligible for some form of booster.

Health officials say people should take whichever booster they are offered as all jabs provide protection.

The original vaccines used in the pandemic were designed to train the body to fight the first form of the virus which emerged in Wuhan, in China, at the end of 2019.

The Covid virus has since mutated substantially, with a stream of new variants emerging that can dodge some of our immune defences. They have caused large surges in cases around the world.

The original vaccines still provide strong protection against becoming severely ill or dying, but companies are tweaking them to match the virus as it evolves.

UK Covid infections lowest since last October -

Covid infections in the UK have fallen to their lowest level since October last year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) says.

Fewer than a million people had the virus in the last week of August - about one in 70, down from one in 15 in mid-July.

Covid is decreasing in England and Wales, but staying constant in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Millions of the most vulnerable are being offered booster jabs.

Health experts have predicted there will be a jump in Covid and flu infections in the run-up to this winter, and anyone who is eligible for an extra vaccine should boost their protection against both illnesses.

The autumn booster campaign began across most of the UK last week, with care home residents vaccinated first. Everyone aged 50 and over will be invited over the coming weeks.

Many will receive one of two recently-updated vaccines which target the Omicron variant, as well as the original virus.

Qatar: FIFA World Cup fans will not need Covid tests -

A Wales fan said he is glad Qatar scrapped mandatory Covid-19 tests ahead of the FIFA World Cup next month.

Visitors to the Gulf state will still have to follow local restrictions, including proof of vaccination.

But from 1 November it will drop a requirement for a PCR test 48 hours before arrival, or a lateral flow test a day before.

Wales men return to the biggest stage in world football for the first time in 64 years after eliminating Ukraine in a playoff in June.

The selection of Qatar as the tournament's host has been controversial because of is record on human rights.

Homosexual acts are illegal, causing groups representing gay football fans to asked the Qatar government to "guarantee their safety".

Some Wales fans said they will boycott the tournament despite their team's qualification.

The decision to drop testing for visitor is due to "the number of Covid-19 cases continuing to fall," the country's health ministry said.

Officials added that maintaining regular hand hygiene, getting tested if experiencing Covid symptoms, and following a healthy lifestyle were still "needs" for visitors.
